Tips for Crocheting Baby Hats
- Choose the Right Yarn for Baby Crochet Hats: Opt for soft, hypoallergenic yarns like merino wool, cotton, or bamboo. My favourite is Benat Softee – Shop HERE
- Use the Correct Hook Size: The hook size should match your yarn weight to ensure the right gauge.SEE Crochet Hooks HERE
- Measure Your Baby’s Head: This will help you determine the right size for the hat. Measure Tapes
- Consider the Style of baby hat you wish to crochet: Choose beanie hats worked in the round, baby hats with earflaps added, or hats with a turn-up brim. You can also choose beginner-friendly crochet hats that are worked side to side.
- Consider the Season: A lightweight cotton hat is perfect for summer, while a warm wool hat is ideal for winter.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment: Try different stitches, colors, and embellishments. You could add crochet flowers or bows to create unique baby hats.
Remember: The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process of creating something.

Baby Hat Size Chart – How to crochet a baby hat to fit
Ensuring your baby hat FITS, These are the sizes I use for Baby hats!
I have included some hat patterns where you can make several sizes. You can make sizes from preemie, newborn size, 0-3 months, and 3-6 months.
When making a baby hat bigger, keep increasing until you reach the crown diameter. Then continue working evenly until you reach the hat height for the desired size.
I am an extremely loose crocheter! check measurements if you are a tight crocheter of sometimes just changing the size of the crochet hook can make the newborn hat slightly bigger. I usually use a 4.00mm crochet hook or a 4.500mm crochet hook when crocheting a baby hat for a newborn
Using the table below you will see a newborn hat measurements, Head circumference, Hat Height, and crochet diameter.
If having a larger baby note the sizes and make changes where necessary. These are all approximate.
Before starting write out the measurements you require for the size.
Example
What Size Should a Newborn Hat be?
Newborn Crown Diameter = approx. 4 inches (this measurement is the circes diameter after the increacing rounds.
Neworn baby Hat Height = approx 5.5 – 6 inches (this is the measurement from TOP of hat to bottom)
Newborn Head Circumference = approx 13 – 15 inches
