The crochet hat was Originally written for 0–3 months baby, and it quickly became one of my most requested hat designs from new mums who loved the fit and wanted more size options.

So, by popular demand, I’ve now added newborn and 3–6 month sizes too.

This simple, snug little hat stretches beautifully and grows with baby, making it a go‑to pattern for gifts, charities, and last‑minute makes.

Abreviations: US TERMS

hdc – Half Double Crochet

ch – Chain

slst – slip stitch

Yarn and Crochet Hook:

You will need 25 grams of double-knit yarn and a 4.50mm hook

Approximate Gauge

14–16 hdc stitches = 4 inches (10 cm)
10–12 rows hdc = 4 inches (10 cm)

Newborn Baby Hat Pattern

Hat Height = 5.5 ” approx.
Hat Circumference = 13″ approx.
Crown width/ Circle Diameter = 4″approx

Rnd 1: ch 3, working 8 hdc into the first chain, slip st to join (8sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around, slip st to join (16sts )

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc into the next st* repeat from * to* around slip st to join. (24sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc into the next 2sts* repeat from * to* around slip st to join. (32sts)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc into the next 3sts* repeat from * to* around slip st to join. (40sts)

Circles Diameter (across flat circle side to side) for SIZE Should measure 4″ approx

Rnd 6: Ch 2, work 1 hdc in each st around, slip st to join. (40sts )

Rnd 7 to Rnd 13: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, slip st to join. (40sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends.
