They’re soft and very easy to crochet, using only basic crochet stitches and lightweight DK yarn and a 4.00mm crochet hook.

Each size for the easy crochet baby hat is written out individually, as a free crochet pattern in the 3 different sizes, perfect project great for beginners, so you can follow along round by round.

What you will need to crochet this baby hat

  • You will need at least 25g of Double knit Baby yarn and a little extra for the crochet flower
  • ** 4.00mm or you can use a 4.50mm crochet hook for larger end size of baby hat
  • To Crochet this Baby  Hat in any of the first sizes You will need to be familiar with the crochet stitches needed below

Abbreviations Used for the Free Crochet Beanie Pattern (US TERMS)

  • Chain – Ch
  • Double Crochet stitches – Dc
  • Single Crochet stitches – Sc
  • Slip to join – slst

GAUGE: 4 dc sts= 1 inch

NOTES:

  • Working in the round Do not turn at the end of the round, but slip st to join. Each round is joined with a slip stitch, chain 2 or chain 3 and is not counted as part of the stitch counts per round.
  • Always make the first stitch in every base of the chain 2/3 to start.
  • This helps with the shaping of the beanie.
  • I chain 2 at the beginning of the round, you may wish to chain 3 at the start if you feel the ch2 is too short
  • **Please be advised I crochet extremely loosely you may need to go up a hook size to achieve the measurements)
  • SO PLEASE check your crown width for hat is correct for your desired size at Rnd  4 /Rnd 5

NEWBORN baby Hat Pattern

What size should a Newborn Baby Crochet Hat be?

  • Finished Measurements
  • Hat Circumference: 13–14 inches
  • Crown Diameter: ~4.25–4.5 inches
  • Hat Height: 5–5.5 inches

Materials required for crocheting the Hat

  • You will need a 4.00mm hook to crochet the baby hat
  • YARN: Dk Light worsted for a Newborn Baby hat

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 12 DC into the first chain, or  instead (Magic circle and 12 DC into the circle), Slip stitch into the top of ch3 (12)

Rnd 2:  Ch 2, 2 DC in every stitch around, Slip into the top of ch 2 to join (24)

Rnd 3: Ch2, (1st Dc in the base chain2 ), 2DC in next stitch, *dc in next stitch, 2DC* in next * repeat around   Slip into the top of ch2 to join (36)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in base of ch 2, dc in nxt st, 2dc in nxt st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (48 sts)

  • at this point, your NEWBORN hat must measure approx 4-4.25 inches APPROX Across the circle diameter

Rnd  5 to Rnd 9: Ch2, starting in the base of Ch2, Dc in each stitch around(48), Slip into the top of Ch2 to join on every round.

Rnd 10 to Rnd 12: OR until length of hat is reached 5-5.5 inches (Ch1 at the beg of each round), Sc in each st around. Slip into the top of ch 1 to join. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

0-3 Months Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

  • Finished Measurements
  • Hat Circumference: 14–15 inches
  • Crown Diameter: ~4.75–5 inches
  • Hat Height: 5.5–6 inches

Gauge: 4 dc sts = 1 inch

  • Materials to need the 0-3 months: Using a Crochet Hook size 4.00mm hook and Dk yarn

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 11 dc into first ch. Sl st to join. (12)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to join. (24)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next st, 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (36)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (48)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next 8 sts, 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (54) Crown should measure approx 4.75–5 inches

Rounds 6–11: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. (54 dc)

Rounds 10–12: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (54 dc) Work to 5.5–6 inches tall.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  • Finished Measurements
  • Hat Circumference: 15–16 inches
  • Crown Diameter: ~5.25–5.5 inches
  • Hat Height: 6–6.5 inches

DK yarn and a 4.00mm  hook

Gauge: 4 dc sts = 1 inch

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3, 11 dc into first ch. Sl st to join. (12)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st to join. (24)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next st, 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (36)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (48)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 2, 2dc in base of ch 2, *dc in next 3 sts , 2dc in next st* repeat around. Sl st to join. (60)
  • Crown should measure approx 5.25–5.5 inches
  • Rnd 6– Rnd 13: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. (60 dc)
  • Rnd 14–Rnd 18: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (60 sc) or work measures 6.25 inches in length if not work more rows
  • Fasten off the yarn and weave in all threads.

Finish off with a crochet flower or weave ribbon through the posts of the last double crochet round.

How to Crochet a Simple Flower for a Baby Hat

Rnd1: Ch2, 10SC intofirst chain on hook , slip st to join, (or an alternative way to start ) Chain 2, 10 sc into 1st chain on hook, slip to join to top of Ch2(10sc)

Rnd 2: *Ch 2, slip into next stitch* repeat from ** around until you have 10 loops (if you want a 5 petal 6 petal just adjust by skipping stitches in between)

Rnd 3: Slip into st base of 1st loop and work chain 2, 3DC in loop for petal, ch2 slip into back into the 1st loop. (first petal complete)  *slip into next loop *chain3, 3 DC Chain 2,  slip into base of petal loop and slip into start next petal* Repeat around 

finish off and weave in ends.
