It is worked from the top down using basic half double crochet stitches.

The half double crochet stitch also gives the hat a little stretch, making it comfortable, yet cosy to wear so its a favourite baby hat pattern for me to use when I am making baby hats to donate to hospitals.

I have included four sizes, from newborn through to 6–12 months, so you can use the same pattern as baby grows.

Each size includes the finished crown diameter, hat circumference and length to help you choose the right fit.

The hat is made with medium/worsted weight yarn and a 4.5O mm crochet hook.

The half double crochet stitch creates a soft, stretchy, comfortable fabric while still making this a wonderfully quick baby beanie to crochet.

You can keep your baby hat simple or make it your own by changing the colors, adding stripes, a pom pom or one of your favorite crochet embellishments

I Love Making Crochet Baby Hats to Donate to Hospitals

These little crochet baby beanie hats are quick to make, practical and a lovely project even when you only have a small amount of yarn.

Why Crochet Baby Hats Make Lovely New Baby Gifts

There are so many reasons I enjoy making baby hats:

  • Keeping little heads warm: A soft handmade hat is useful during cooler weather and when taking a baby outdoors.
  • New baby gifts: Baby hats are quick to crochet and can be paired with matching crochet baby booties or a baby blanket to make a lovely handmade gift set.
  • Newborn photo props: A simple crochet baby beanie adds a handmade touch to newborn photographs and can be made in colors to complement an outfit or photo theme.
  • Charity donations: Baby hats are small, practical projects that can be made in batches for hospitals and charities that accept handmade baby items.
  • Using leftover yarn: Because these hats use a relatively small amount of yarn, they are also a handy way to use suitable yarn left over from other baby crochet projects.

One of the things I particularly like about crocheting baby hats is how easily you can change their appearance simply by choosing a different yarn color or adding a small finishing detail.

What Do You Need to Crochet a Baby Hat?

You only need a few basic supplies to make this half double crochet baby hat.

Materials

  • Medium/Worsted Weight Yarn (#4): Choose a soft yarn that feels comfortable against a baby’s skin.
  • 4.5 mm Crochet Hook: This is the hook size I use for this baby hat. You may need to adjust your hook size slightly if your finished measurements are different from mine.
  • Yarn Needle: For weaving in the yarn ends securely when the hat is finished.
  • Scissors: For cutting your yarn.
  • Measuring Tape or Ruler: You will need this to check both the crown diameter and finished hat height as you crochet.

Optional Embellishments

  • You can leave the baby hat plain or add a small crochet flower pom-pom or another simple embellishment.
  • If you add anything to a baby hat, make sure it is securely attached with no loose parts or yarn ends.

Important: Before continuing with the main body of the hat, measure the crown circle and make sure you have reached the correct diameter for the size you are making. This is what helps you achieve the correct finished hat size.

  • slst = sl st to first hdc of each round to join
  • Rnd = Round

Gauge: My gauge is approximately 7 rounds = 3″. I have ADDED in the crown measurements for each size. Please make sure your hat meets its approximate crown measurement at the end of the increasing rounds. The LENGTH of the hat is achieved by working more rounds if you need to.

Once you have finished the increasing rounds, lay the crown flat and measure straight across the center. Use this measurement as your main guide before continuing with the straight rounds.

Baby Hat Size Chart

The crown measurement is the important checkpoint in this pattern.

Once the increasing rounds are complete, lay the crown flat and measure straight across the center.

Then continue working the hat without increasing until you reach the approximate finished length shown above.

Pattern Notes:

  • Measurements are in INCHES written as (“)
  • Chains do not count as stitches in this pattern.
  • Join your round to the first hdc, not your chain.
  • Start your first stitch of each round in the same space as your chain.
  • Hat Measurements are based on an Approximate average. I have included an above average for the baby hats length. But the hat will be just OVER this measurement (to allow for a little turn-up if needed)
  • * to * = Repeat the steps between the * *

Need to adjust the fit? If you need the head circumference of a larger size but a slightly shorter hat, follow the crown instructions for the larger size and work fewer straight rounds. If the circumference is right but you need a little extra length, simply add another straight round or two of half double crochet before fastening off.
