One of my favourite things about this easy crochet baby hat pattern is that you don’t need to buy special chunky yarn to make it.
Why I Use Two Strands of DK Yarn for This Baby Hat
This little hat is a chunky baby hat without using chunky yarn! Chunky yarn can be quite stiff, but many DK baby yarns are specifically made for babies.
You simply hold two strands of DK (double knitting) yarn together and crochet with them as though they were one strand.
This creates a thicker, warmer crochet fabric while keeping the lovely softness of baby yarn.
The half double crochet stitches make the hat quick to work up, and the little ribbed brim adds extra stretch around the baby’s head.
I particularly love how the ribbing gives this simple baby beanie a beautiful traditional finish without making the pattern complicated.
Top Tip: You can use two strands of the same colour for a classic baby hat or combine two coordinating colours for a lovely subtle effect. or one colour for the main hat and a seperate colour for the ribbed brim.
What Size Crochet Baby Hat Should I Make?
This free pattern includes two sizes: Small Newborn and 0–3 Months.
| Size | Crown Diameter | Hat Length Before Brim |
|---|---|---|
| Small Newborn | Approx. 4 inches | Approx. 4.5 inches |
| 0–3 Months | Approx. 4.5 inches | Approx. 5 inches |
The crown diameter is measured straight across the widest part of the flat crochet circle.
Always check your measurements as you crochet, as every baby’s head is different. The ribbed brim adds a little extra length and provides some stretch around the opening.
Materials Needed
- DK baby yarn – 2 strands held together throughout
- 5.5 mm crochet hook (US I/9)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Crochet Gauge
Using two strands of DK held together and a 5.5 mm crochet hook:
- 6 half double crochet stitches = approximately 2 inches
- 2 rounds of half double crochet = approximately 1 inch in height
Your gauge matters more than the number of rounds. Check your crown diameter and hat length before adding the ribbed brim.

Tips for Crocheting the Perfect Baby Hat
1. Keep both strands of yarn together.
When crocheting with two strands of DK, make sure you catch both strands with your hook as you work each stitch.
I use the MIDDLE of the ball of yarn and the outside of the yarn to work with. This will help keep the finished fabric even and neat
2. Always measure your crochet crown.
Before starting the straight rounds, lay your crown flat and measure across its widest point. If your crown is significantly larger or smaller than the pattern measurements, check your gauge.
3. Keep your slip stitches loose.
When crocheting the ribbed brim, avoid pulling the slip stitches too tightly. This helps the ribbing stretch comfortably.
4. Check the hat length before adding the brim.
Measure from the centre top of the hat down to the lower edge. It’s much easier to adjust the length before starting the ribbing.
5. Choose soft, baby-friendly yarn.
I recommend a soft, washable DK yarn that feels comfortable against delicate skin. Avoid scratchy yarns or loose decorative embellishments.
Remember to remove baby hats indoors when appropriate and never leave a hat on a sleeping baby.
