Why This Pattern Is Great

This design skips confusing starts like magic circle . we begin with a chain start, working into the first chain, and build out the crown in a repeated increace sequence.

It’s ideal for beginners yet satisfying for experienced makers who just want a reliable, classic beanie pattern.

Materials you will need to Crochet this beanie

  • Yarn: Medium/DK (US light Worsted) weight yarn
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G) adjust to get the gauge fit you want
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors
  • Optional: Measuring tape to check circumference
  • Notes: Yarn thickness varies; gauge swatch helps ensure the right fit. 3.5dc = 1 inch (I am an extremely loose crocheter, please check measurements and circle diameters for fit!)

Beanie Crochet Pattern Instructions

Starting at the Crown – Top of the Hat

Ch 4

  1. Rnd 1: 12 dc in 4th chain from hook. Join with sl st (12 sts)
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Join (24 sts)
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next. Join (36 sts)
  4. Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next. Join (48 sts)
  5. Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next. Join (60 sts)
  6. Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next. Join (72 sts)
    • Measure the circles diameter here if need to make it bigger by continuing the increasing pattern ie. dc, in next 5 sts, and 2dc in next st, round (80sts) – Large adult circle diameter 7.5 inches across
    • Once the circle matches your crown target, stop increasing!

Body

  • Rnds 7–17: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join (72 sts) TURN your work
    • Keep going until your hat reaches ~9″ from top (before cuff).

3. Turn-Up Cuff

  1. Rnds 18–22: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join
  2. Weave in ends
  3. Fold cuff up
  4. Fasten off and weave in ends and turnup the cuff

  • Fit Check Early: Measure your crown circle before you start body rounds to avoid surprises.
  • Color Play: Add stripes by changing yarn at the end of a full round.

    Keep going until your hat reaches ~9″ from the top (before cuff). TURN WORK and now working in the opposite direction

    Rnds 18–22: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join
    Weave in ends
    Fold cuff up . Weave in ends
