The simple baby hat crochet pattern is made from the top down, and then working a (2dc, ch1, 2dc = V shell stitch ) around the body of the hat, finished off with a single crochet edging which if you want to add even more texture ot the baby hat, work the single crochets into the Back Loops only creating a more ribbed brim.

Materials You will need to crochet the Baby Hat
- Yarn: DK weight yarn or light worsted weight yarn (approx. 30g)
- Hook: 4.00 mm (G/6) crochet hook
- Yarn needle,

Size and Gauge for Newborn
- Size: Newborn – approx. 12″ circumference, fits up to 13″ head
- Crown diameter: ~3.8″
- Gauge: 5 sc = 1 inch Hat is stretchy and forgiving.
Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)
The baby hat is only easy for beginners IF you know these basic stitches
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
( ) = work instructions within parentheses into the same stitch
- *to * repeat instructions between asterisks
SPecial stitch – 2dc, ch1, 2dc, all worked into the same stitch = V shell stitch
NEWBORN BABY HAT FREE Crochet Hat Pattern & Instructions
Crown – Increase Rounds
- Round 1: Ch 3, work 6sc into the first chain. Do NOT JOIN, work continuously until the shell sts(6 sts)
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sts)
Round 3: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st; repeat around. n (18 sts)
Round 4: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts; repeat around. (24 sts)
Round 5: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts; repeat around. (30 sts)
Round 6: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts; repeat around. (36 sts)
Round 7: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts; repeat around. (42 sts) - Round 8: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts; repeat around. (48sts) (3.8″ – 4″ inches across circle)
- Round 9: sc in each stitch around. slst to join into next st, (NEW beginning of ROUNDS)
- Shell Stitch Section
- Round 8: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, ch 1, 2 dc in same st (first shell made), skip 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
- Round 10: Sl st into the next ch-1 space, (ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same ch-1 space. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each ch-1 space around. Join with a sl st. (12 Shells)
- Rounds 11–14: Repeat Round 10.
- Finishing
- Round 15: Ch 1, sc in same st and, *sc in next st, skip ch1 space, sc in next in each stitch* repeat around. Join. (simply skip the ch1 space, do not make a sc in the ch1 space)
Rounds 16: Sc in each st around or until hat HEIGHT from top measure 5 to 5.25 inches - Fasten off and weave in ends.
0-3 months BABY HAT FREE Crochet Pattern Instructions
NOTES: Do NOT JOIN, work continuously until the shell sts
- Round 1: Ch 3, work 6sc into the first chain. (6 sts)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
- Round 3: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st; repeat around. (18 sts)
- Round 4: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts; repeat around. (24 sts)
- Round 5: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts; repeat around. (30 sts)
- Round 6: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts; repeat around. (36 sts)
- Round 7: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts; repeat around. (42 sts)
- Round 8: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 sts; repeat around. (48 sts)
- Round 9: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts; repeat around. (54 sts) Circle diameter to measure 4.25 inches
- Round 10: sc in each st around, slst into the next st (this is the new begining of round)
- Round 11:Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, ch 1, 2 dc in same st. Skip 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * to * around. slip st to first dc to join (12 shells)
- Round 12: Sl st into next ch-1 space. (Ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same space. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each ch-1 space around. slip st to first dc to Join.
- Rounds 13 Round 16 : Repeat Round 12, until Hat from top to Bottom Height is 5.5 inches
- Round 17: Ch 1, sc in same st and, *sc in next st, skip ch1 space, sc in next in each stitch* repeat around. Join. (simply skip the ch1 space, do not make a sc in the ch1 space)
Rounds 18–20: Repeat Round 16. until hat height is achieved 6 inches
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Simple Crochet Flower for Baby Hat – Free Pattern (5 Petals)
🧶 Materials
- Same yarn used for the baby hat (DK or light worsted)
- 4.00 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Stitches Used (US Terms)
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
FREE Crochet Flower Pattern for Baby Hats
Round 1:
Ch 4, sl st into first ch to form a ring.
Round 2:
Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) into ring — this creates your first petal.
Repeat from * to * 4 more times to make 5 petals. (All petals are worked into the same center ring.)
Sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off leaving a long tail and weave in ends.
Stitch a small button or pearl in the center for added charm.
Use the Long Tail, sewing the crochet flower directly to the baby hat with a yarn needle and matching thread.
