Newborn baby beanie Hat crochet pattern (Quick & EASY)

These tiny crocheted beanie hats are a joy to make and are such an easy hat pattern even for beginners.
2 sizes are included so you can crochet a Preemie hat or a Newborn Hat by following the directions.

SO whether you’re an experienced crocheter or just starting out, this pattern is designed to be easy to follow and quick to complete.
I have added an extra decorative row to the crocheted newborn baby beanie hat for both a boy and a girl.
This means even if the little crocheted hat is too big it can be turned up and still look pretty.
Plus, these hats make fantastic gifts for baby showers or donations to your local hospital’s NICU. (check with your local unit first!)
Abbreviations (US TERMS)
DC= double crochet
sc – single crochet
ch= Chain
Always use the ch 2 at the beginning of the round to slip stitch into to join.
Please NOTE: If making the ribbed finishing for the hat you will required to know how to Front Post double crochet (FPDC) and Back Post double crochet (BPDC)
CROCHET HOOK: For the Newborn, I used a 4.50mm crochet hook, and
Preemie is 4.00mm and if you want to make the baby hat even smaller you can go DOWN hook sizes, 3.50mm, 3.00mm)
Preemie Baby Hat Sizes (approx 6lbs)
Crochet Hook 4.00 mm
YARN weight: DK Yarn (I used Stylecraft)
- Preemie (5-6lbs):
- Head Circumference: 12-13 inches
- Hat Circumference/Width: 10-11 inches
- Crochet Circle Diameter: 3-3.5 inches
- Height Mid Ear: 3.5 inches
- Hat Height (Top of CROWN to Bottom of EAR): 4-4.5 inches
Newborn Baby Hat Size
Crochet hook 4: .50 mm
YARN weight: DK Yarn (I used Stylecraft)
- Head Circumference: 13 inches
- Hat Circumference/Width: 12-12.5 inches
- Crochet Circle Diameter: 3.5-4 inches
- Height Mid Ear: 4.5 inches
- Hat Height (Top of CROWN to Bottom of EAR): 4.5-5.5 inches
Baby Hat Pattern starts HERE
Ch3, work 12 DC into the first chain (14sts)
Rnd 2:
Ch 3, DC into the base of chain DC in same stitch (counts as first 2DC) *2DC in next stitch *, Repeat from ** around, Join with a slip stitch in top of ch 3 of the previous rnd. (28 sts)
Rnd 3:
Ch 2 , DC into the base of chain DC in same space, (counts as first 2DC) *DC in next stitch, 2DC in next st*, Repeat from ** around, Join with a slip stitch in top of ch 3 of the previous rnd. (sts)
(CHECK DIAMETER measurement for size here PREEMIE – approx 3.25 inches NEWBORN – approx 3.5 inches approx) (42 ts)
Repeat Rnd 4 until you reach LENGTH of Hat for size
PREEMIE 3.75- 4 inches approx and NEWBORN 4.5 – 5 inches: (I worked 4 more rounds to achieve length)
RND 4 : Ch 2 and make a dc in the 1base of chain. dc in each space around (finish each round with a dc in the previous rounds JOINING slip stitch, this increases each round by 1 stitch.
Decorative Edgeing Finish for Girl
Rnd 9 : ch 4 skip a dc, slst into the next, ch 4, skip a dc, slst into the next, repeat around and slip stitch to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Simple Crochet Flower Pattern
Ch 8, join with
a sl st in the first chain, ch 8, join again in that first chain, repeat to make 6 loops/petals. Thread the 2 ends (starting and ending yarn) into the hat, about 1 dc apart. Tie them together 3 times
inside the hat.
The ribbed finish for Baby Hat
completes 1 more row using an alternating front post and back post dc.
Rnd9: ch2 to start, *front post double crochet around the post of the next st, back post double crochet around the post of the next stitch* repeat around.
Fasten off and weave in all ends securely
