How to Crochet the Double Puff Stitch (Dbl-Puff)
WATCH youtube VIDEO @6.00min – HERE
- To make 1 Double Puff Stitch (Dbl-Puff):
- Work 2 Puff Stitches into the same stitch or space, without chaining between them.
- This forms a compact “V” of stacked puffs that sits close together for a dense, textured band.
- When working the next row of puff stitches:
Insert your hook into the center of the two Puff Stitches below — between them — and work the next Double Puff Stitch there. - Each Double Puff row is worked into the middle of the previous Puff Stitch row, stacking the stitches neatly to form the thick, raised band used for the turn-up brim.
Construction notes for the Puff Stitch Ribbed Hat Crochet Pattern
- The hat is worked flat in rows and seamed along the short edges to form a tube.
- The starting chain = height of the hat, including the turn-up brim.
- All rows of the main hat body are worked in single crochet (sc) through the back loop only (BLO) to create stretch and ribbing.
- The turn-up brim adds extra warmth and texture. It’s made up of:
- some BLO sc ( worked straight), followed by
- 1 band of Double Puff Stitch (Dbl-Puff) worked across the lower edge.
- The Double Puff Stitch band is worked into the middle of the previous puff stitches, creating a raised, cushioned texture that keeps ears cozy.
- The PUFF stitches will push out a little making a slight a to the rectangle but this is compensated by the Turn-up!
- PLACE a marker in that chain 1 space! as you will need to slst into it!
- When seaming, join the short ends together using slip stitches or whip stitch
- Close the top of the hat with a running stitch through the top loops, pull tight, and secure.
- Weave in all ends neatly.
- Optional: Add a pom-pom or matching yarn tie to finish.
How to make the ribbed Puff Stitch Hat Pattern bigger or smaller
Notes & tips
- If your height differs from the starting chain, measure the chain to the Total Height. Rather than relying on counts, height fit matters more than the exact chain number. And adjust where to work the PUFF stitch (keeping the BRIMS LAST back loop single crochet sts the same number per size as written)
- Work in ROW sequence until you reach the HAT circumference (must be smaller than head circumference, as the Puff Rows push out the Hat Brim.
