As someone who’s spent years happily tangled in yarn (and designed a fair few patterns along the way!)

This free baby beanie crochet hat pattern comes in 3 Sizes, which I found with my grandson he grew out of his newborn size relatively quickly, but my daughter loved the cozy style of these hats for him.

I found myself quickly adding new sizes to this pattern, so I’m excited to share my go-to, super beginner-friendly easy crochet baby hat pattern with you.

Why This Baby Hat Pattern Is Your New Go-To

This simple, beginner-friendly crochet baby hat pattern is worked with soft DK yarn and a 4.00mm crochet hook. It uses basic double crochet stitches and is worked seamlessly in a continuous spiral, so there’s no annoying seam to worry about.

You’ll love this baby hat because it’s quick to make, fits comfortably, and pairs perfectly with your favorite baby booties, cardigan, or blanket patterns — making it an ideal gift or keepsake for little ones.

What size crochet hook should I use for a baby hat?

This pattern uses a 4.00 mm crochet hook, but always check your gauge first. Everyone crochets a bit differently, so if your stitches are too tight or too loose, go up or down a hook size until you match the pattern gauge of 7 dc = 2 inches.

What is the best yarn to use for a crochet baby hat?

For a soft, safe finish that’s gentle on newborn skin, a baby-specific double knit (DK) yarn is ideal. Look for yarn labeled “baby” or “soft” and make sure it’s machine washable. Acrylic blends or 100% acrylic are often the best balance of soft and practical. – See great deals on yarn HERE

How many stitches do I need for a newborn crochet hat?

For this pattern, you’ll begin with 14 double crochet stitches in the first round, increasing each round to build a smooth crown.

How long does it take to crochet a baby hat?

Most crocheters can finish this pattern in under 1 hour, even as a beginner. I can crochet 2 newborn baby hats in less than an hour. It’s a quick, no-fuss project that’s perfect for last-minute gifts or craft fairs

Can you make these little crocheted hats with turn-ups! in different stitches)
Yes I find I like to add a row or 2 as baby sizes do differ. You can ADD extra Rows once the LENGTH of the Hat is reached.
I TURN my work and work the turnups working inside out and going in the OPPOSITE direction!

NOTE for TURN UP: If you would like a Turn up on the hat

Once you have reached the HAT HEIGHT, TURN your work inside out and working in the opposite direction the Double crochet stitches are running on the opposite side make 3 or 4 rows as preferred
