Newborn Knit Hat Pattern : Easy Flat-Knit Pattern
This little easy newborn knit hat pattern was first made for my grandson, for him coming home from the hospital.

And I was asked to knit more for the local maternity unit as they were are perfect fit
It’s a simple, comforting easy knitting project that beginners can manage without stress.

The whole hat is worked flat on two straight needles, then seamed up the back.
The top is then gathered to create that soft, rounded newborn shape.
Materials
1 oz DK/Double Knit baby yarn (100% acrylic recommended) One ball makes approx. 5 hats.
4.00 mm Knitting needles (Consider using 4.5 mm needles to cast on edge to help make the hat brim stretchy for newborns)
Finished Size (Newborn)
- Width: 5.5 in
- Length: 6.75 in
Instructions
1. Cast On
Cast on 72 stitches. Make sure your cast-on edge is extremely loose.
(Alternatively, cast on using a needle one size larger.)
2. Ribbed Band
Work in K1, P1 ribbing until the band measures 1.75 inches.
3. Main Body
Work the following two-row sequence:
- Row 1: Knit
- Row 2: Purl
Repeat these two rows until the entire piece measures 4.5 inches, ending after a purl row.
4. Shape the Crown– Crown decreases
Row 1 (RS): *K6, K2tog* repeat to end (63 sts)
Row 2 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 3 (RS): *K5, K2tog* repeat to end (54 sts)
Row 4 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 5 (RS): *K4, K2tog* repeat to end (45 sts)
Row 6 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 7 (RS): *K3, K2tog*repeat to end (36 sts)
Row 8 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 9 (RS): *K2, K2tog* repeat to end (27 sts)
Row 10 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 11 (RS): *K1, K2tog* repeat to end (18 sts)
Row 12 (WS): Purl all sts.
Row 13: (RS) K2tog across (9sts)
Finishing: Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight to close sew the back seam neatly ( do not pull too tight), matching the ridges and weave in ends
