The whole hat is worked flat on two straight needles, then seamed up the back.

The top is then gathered to create that soft, rounded newborn shape.

Materials

1 oz DK/Double Knit baby yarn (100% acrylic recommended) One ball makes approx. 5 hats.

4.00 mm Knitting needles (Consider using 4.5 mm needles to cast on edge to help make the hat brim stretchy for newborns)

  • Width: 5.5 in
  • Length: 6.75 in

Instructions

1. Cast On

Cast on 72 stitches. Make sure your cast-on edge is extremely loose.

  • Next Row: K2tog across → 36 sts
  • Next Row: P2tog across → 18 sts
  • 5. Finish the Hat
    1. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
    2. Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle.
    3. Pass the needle through each remaining stitch, removing them from the knitting needle as you go.
    4. Pull firmly to close the top of the hat.
    5. Use the same tail to sew the back seam, matching the ridges for a neat finish.
    6. Weave in all ends.
