I just love that my 2 hobbies have come together: crochet and horses.
I had a beautiful crochet Fly bonnet for the boys and wondered how easy it would be to crochet them a hat complete with POM POM

Luckily, my little Clydesdale horse is such a sweetheart  he would stand all day to be fussed over.

SO please check your measurements and adjust. I have included general horses’ sizes to help you.
I have added the orange and green photos to help you size for a horse.

To Crochet, this hat for an AVERAGE horse (Thoroughbred size )

I used a Double Knit yarn and a 5.00mm hook.
I am an extremely loose crocheter my gauge/tension was 12DC to 4 inches, so adjust if needed.

This will make it fit an average horse please remember. I wrote the original pattern to fit my 2-year-old Clydesdale whose head is still a lot bigger than most horses’ heads. And it also fitted/stretched to fit my 6- year-old.

SO please check your measurements and adjust. I have included general horses’ sizes to help you.
I have added The Orange and Green photos to help you visulise how it is made

You will need several measurements to CUSTOM the FIT and Size of the Horses Hat

  1. 1.Size between his ears
  2. 2. And the measurement from below his ear to the top of his eyebrow.
  3. 3. Browband

NOTE: This pattern IS a guesstimate as I have not actually found a solid measurement guide so if anyone could help that’d be fantastic.

I have NOT charged for this pattern, Most people think if we own horses, we are rich, but I can assure you that is farthest from the truth EVER!

If you have a horse available to measure it Does make it easier to find a fit.

I have added in several measurements to help you crochet the horse hat, but these are estimates I have taken from bridle sizes.

To make a custom-fit crochet for a horse, you will need 3 measurements

BROWBAND (start to measure from the back of ear around and across the front of ears to the back of the other ear)

Loose enough to get 2 fingers to sit comfortably.

  • Small Pony -12′
  • pony – 13.5′
  • Cob – 15′
  • full horse – 16′
  • Extra full Draft – 17′

Size Between ears – measure from Base corner  of  ear to the opposite base

Average sizes

  • Small Pony – 4.25′
  • PONY – 4.75 ‘
  • COB – 5.25′
  • HORSE/FULL – 5.75′
  • Extra Full/ Draft – 6.5′

Length from above eye to ear.  This really is a guestimate!

The middle 8 ROWS of 26 sts will equal the  BETWEEN THE EAR MEASUREMENTS – This measurement for between the ears is for a HORSE=  5 inches)

The RED version above was for the Clydesdale/Draft.
NOTES: the Next chain stitches you will make will be an equal number on each side.
To reach this number you will take the BROWBAND measurement and  subtract The middle T piece.
then divide that measurement = number of chains to make to equal that last measurement.
