Why You’ll Love This Balaclava Pattern
As many of you know, I previously shared a crochet heart granny square pattern, and it became incredibly popular.
These heart granny squares are quick, simple, and versatileโperfect for making hats, blankets, cardigans, and now, this snug-fitting balaclava! You can replace these with ANY type of Granny Square you wish to crochet your balaclava in!
I have included step by step images and written instructions for crocheting the square and turning them into the balaclava
- How to Crochet the solid heart granny square.
- How to join the squares and the layout of the squares for the balaclava with a face opening and a ribbed neckpiece thatโs as functional as it is fashionable.
How to Crochet the Solid Heart Granny Square
To crochet the solid heart in a square, follow the written pattern below. If youโd like more details or a separate step by step written and image tutorial for the heart granny square pattern, you can find it here.
NOTES:
- This pattern does not use a magic ring.
- Start by loosely chaining 4 stitches. Work all the stitches from the first round into the first chain from the hook. This method provides a secure and adjustable center.
- If you crochet loosely, consider going up a hook size, especially for the single crochet (sc) stitches in round 3.
Can the balaclava be made bigger or smaller? Sizing and Adjustments
The size I made fits a 20โ21 inch head circumference. You can easily adjust the sizing by calculating the required square dimensions:
Head circumference รท 4 = Width of each square
For example: My head measures 20 inches. Divide by 4, and each square needs to measure 5 inches across.
How many Granny Squares do you need for a balaclava?
You will need 4 x heart granny squares for a small/medium adult size (7 rounds total).

Ensure that your head-covering squares are large enough and provide a comfortable fit.
