Materials you will need:

Stretch: Crochet headbands have some stretch, so it’s common to make them slightly smaller than the actual head circumference.

How wide should an earwarmer be?

  • A crocheted headband used as an ear warmer is usually at LEAST 4 inches WIDE, when making your starting chain make sure it is at least 4 inches long, If you need to add more then remember to adjust the main section of the pattern keeping the slsts at the beginning to shape the earwarmer to your head.

How Long should a crochet Headband be?

I prefer to make it an inch LESS than required,

  • Toddler: 18-20 inches
  • Child: 20-21 inches
  • Teen: 21-22 inches
  • Adult: 22-23 inches

What is the best yarn for ear warmers?

  • I prefer to use an Aran weight yarn or a chunky yarn for my earwarmers. It is warm cosy and is not too hot when wearing

  • Ch = Chain
  • St = Stitch
  • sl st =slip stitch

Special stitch used is the Back Loops ONLY Half double crochet slip st ( BLO-Hdc-sl st)

  • Yarn over: Yarn over your crochet hook.
  • Insert hook: Insert your hook into the back loop only of the designated stitch.
  • Yarn over: Yarn over your hook again.
  • Pull through: Pull the yarn through all loops on your hook.

The Crochet Earwarmer Pattern

Ch 17 to start (IF you want to make this WIDER or SMALLER increase the starting chain and manipulate the middle sts to the pattern, keeping the slst 3sts at the beginning and end of ROWS)

  • Row 1: slst in the 2nd chain from hook and slst in the nxt 2 sts, BL-Hdc-slst in next 10 sts, slst in the last 3sts, Ch1 TURN
  • Row 2: slst in the first 3 sts, BL-Hdc-slst in the next 10 sts, slst in the last 3 sts,Ch1 TURN
  • Repeat Row 2 for the desired length of your ear warmer. (at least 1 inch less than the circumference of the head)

Fasten off and sew the first and last rows together to join.
