Abbreviations (US terms)

2sctog = Decrease (dec) by working 2 single crochet stitches together

2sc = increase by working 2 single crochet stitch sin the 1 stitch 

* to* = repeat what is between around 

Surface Bobble Stitch

insert your hook into the place you want the bobble to be. 

  • Pull through yarn (1 loop on hook)
  • YO again and pull through (you’ll have 3 loops on your hook).
  • YO and pull through the first two loops (leaving 2 loops on your hook).
  • Repeat the above steps in the same stitch until you have 4 loops on your hook.
  • YO and pull through all 5 loops to complete the bobble.

To finish bobble stitch, slip stitch back into space you joined yarn, fasten off and weave in ends 

What you will need to crochet the Baby Chick

  • YARN – Any Type Chunky Blanket Yarn (I used snug as a bug Yarnsmiths But I would NOT recommend this yarn! It frays and is hard to pull through)
  • and a small piece of orange yarn for the beak
  • scissors
  • needle
  • NOTE: YOu can also use 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together!
  • Crochet Hook size – I used a 6.00mm
  • Stuffing

Chick Pattern Starts HERE

Make wings 2

  • Rnd 1: ch2, and work 6sc into the first chain (6)
  • Rnd 2: *2sc in next st, sc in next st,* repeat around (9)
  • Rnd3: sc in each stitch around (9)
  • Rnd4: sc in nxt stitch, 2sctog in nxt st (6sts) 
  • FOLD in HALF and sc across the top 3sts of wing to close 

You will join these onto the body later (if you are confident in joining pieces as you go you can add the wings at Rnd 11.

However i just think you get a better placement for the wings when you sew them into position)

HEAD and BODY of the Baby Chick worked as 1 piece

  • Rnd 1: ch2, and work 8sc into the first chain (8)
  • Rnd 2: * 2sc in next st,* repeat around (16)
  • Rnd3:  *2sc in next st,  sc in next st,* repeat around (24)
  • Rnd 4 to Rnd 7: sc in each stitch around, (24sts)
  • Rnd 8: *work 2sctog, sc in the next st,* Repeat around  (16sts) 
  • Rnd 9:  *work 2 sctog* repeat around  (8sts)

Starting the Chick Body

  • Rnd 10: * 2sc in the next st* repeat around, (16sts)
  • Rnd 11: *2sc in next st, sc in the next st* repeat around  (24sts) 
  • Rnd 12 to Rnd 16: sc in each stitch around  

START TO STUFF 

  • Rnd 17: * 2sctog, sc in the next 2 sts* repeat around (18sts) 
  • Rnd 17: * 2sctog, sc in next st,* (12sts)
  • Rnd 18: 2sctog, repeat around (6sts) 
  • Fasten off and weave in ends. 

Creating the Baby Chicks FEET

Use stitch marker or pins to position feet. 

Working through the body, join yarn at the pins, and work a Surface bobble stitch for each foot. (see special stitch instructions above)
