This 5-strand braided crochet headband has been one of my highest-selling crochet items at craft fairs. It is stylish, warm, and ridiculously easy to make. You’ll crochet five simple strands, braid them together, and sew the ends. That’s it! No tricky stitches, just clean double crochet rows that create a beautiful, chunky twisted texture. Once you make one, you’ll be hooked.
Materials You’ll Need to Crochet This headband
- Yarn: Aran Weight (you can also use Bulky weight yarn) Just make the Chain Lengths to = head circumference) Optional: Two strands of DK yarn held together.
- Hook: 5.5 mm crochet hook (for the Deep Red color braided earwarmer on I used Aran weight and Arnan Yarn). If changing yarn weight and hook sizes just make sure you’re keeping the SIZEs to the head circumference above – The headband is made the SAME way

Sizing tips:
- The headband will shrink once you plait it but then we will make up that lost length by creating the join at the back
Pattern Notes
- Each strand is approximately 1 inch wide. (YOU CAN make these Wider IF you want by working 2 ROWSM of .double crochet before joining Just remember When it comes to joining, you will have more Stitches)
- The completed headband width after braiding = at LEAST 4.5 inches.
- Braiding shortens the length of the stripts slightly, but the fit balances after joining.
- Work into the back bump of your starting chain for a clean edge.

Free Crochet Braided Headband Pattern for the 5 strand Plait Earwamer Instructions
Start: This made a SMALL Adult earwarmer
Chain 70 +3 (73) – or (Use headband pattern size Chart and approx chains for sizes)
Row 1: Dc in the BACK BUMP of the 4th chain from the hook and Back Bump Double Crochet in each ch across. Do not fasten off.
Repeat Ch 73 & Row 1 four more times to create five identical strands, all joined together at one end.
Joining the Strands
Row 1: Sc 10 sts evenly across the ends of all 5 strands to join.
Row 2: Sk 1 st, sc in each st to end (9 sts).
Row 3: Sk 1 st, sc in each st to end (8 sts).
Continue decreasing 1 stitch per row until you have 5 sts left.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
How to Make the 5-Strand Braid
- Secure the joined ends of the strands under a book or clip.
- Arrange 3 strands on one side and 2 on the other.
- Take the outermost strand from the group of 3, weave it over then under into the middle.
- You’ll now have 3 on the opposite side, repeat the same step, alternating sides.
- Continue until you reach the end of the strands.
- Secure with a stitch holder or pin.
Finishing the Headband
- Make sure you single croche tthrough the TOP and Bottom of the double crochetsas you work Row 1 which joins the strands together
- Row 1: Sc 10 sts evenly across the ends of all 5 strands to join.
Row 2: Sk 1 st, sc in each st to end (9 sts).
Row 3: Sk 1 st, sc in each st to end (8 sts).
Continue decreasing 1 stitch per row until you have 5 sts left.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. - Sew both ends together, ensuring your braid lies flat and untwisted.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends neatly.
