How This Easy Crochet Earwarmer Is Made

  • The basic construction of this FREE Easy Crochet Ear warmer Pattern starts with short rows worked across the width of the band.
  • You’ll crochet back and forth until your piece reaches the right length to wrap comfortably around your head that’s your head circumference.
  • Once your rectangle is the perfect size, simply sew the short ends together to form the earwarmer shape.

The beauty of this design is in its simplicity. You’ll use just one stitch the single crochet (US terms) and work into the back loop only of each stitch from the previous row.

This technique gives the fabric a soft, stretchy ribbed texture that looks classic and feels cozy and is perfect for the ear warmer crochet patterns.

To make the earwarmer your own, I’ll show you four different ways to finish the headband, from a clean, minimalist look to a stylish front twist.

Each version of the ear warmer headband uses the same foundation Easy Ribbed Pattern but creates a completely different style.

How to Work a Single Crochet in the Back Loop Only (BLO)

  1. Identify the back loop of the stitch from the previous row.
    • Each stitch has two loops at the top: a front loop (closest to you) and a back loop (furthest from you).
    • Insert your hook only into the back loop, not under both loops as usual.
  2. Yarn over (wrap the yarn over your hook from back to front).
  3. Pull through the back loop — you’ll now have two loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over again, and pull through both loops on your hook.

You’ve just made a single crochet in the back loop only!

Why Use The Loop Single Crochet?

  • Perfect for sizing flexibility: especially helpful when making gifts or items without exact measurements.
  • Creates a ribbed texture that looks knit-like and adds visual interest.
  • Adds stretch, making it ideal for fitted items like headbands and cuffs.
  • Gauge
  • 8 sts = 2 inches
  • 10 rows = 3 inches
  • NOTES: You can add or subtract rows if you feel it’s too long. YOu can change the number of starting chains to make it thinner or wider.
  • However do not be scared to stretch the headband when measuring as it WILL stretch with use, so the headband is better to start slightly smaller in length when made
  • The number of Rows is worked out by adding a little bit of stretch into the headband and will fit approximately for the sizes below.
