COSY Crochet Baby Earflap Hat Patterns FREE -4 sizes

A Cozy Ribbed Crochet Baby Hat with Earflaps

This free crochet baby hat pattern with earflaps is sized for newborn to toddler, written in US terms, and made with DK yarn (two strands held together) and a 4.5 mm hook.

The hat is worked in a soft ribbed texture using post stitches, with earflaps added directly onto the hat so no sewing is required. Finish with braids and a large pom pom for extra cuteness.

The free crochet earflap hat pattern with ties and a pom pom is very generous in sizing, stretchy, you and mum will love them!

Why I love this Baby Hat

I first made this cozy pom pom hat for my grandson and kept adjusting the size as he grew.
After I shared a photo of him toddling along the beach, the requests came pouring in for larger sizes.
That original little hat has now been written up into a full pattern with multiple sizes, including toddler.

What we found was that these hats are super stretchy, and we got several months of wear out of each size—especially the bigger ones!

You can view the original 0–3 months crochet hat with earflaps pattern HERE, which was made using half double crochet and front post stitches for a softer feel against baby’s head.

As my grandson grew, we found that front and back post double crochet gave the perfect stretchiness and textured hat

Why You’ll Love This Free Crochet Baby Earflap Hat Pattern

  • Stretchy ribbing textured hat: Made with front and back post double crochet
  • The Baby hat STAYS on and is a great hat for that stage when they’re trying to pull the hats off.
  • Custom sizing: From newborn to 18 months/toddlers
  • No-sew earflaps: Worked directly onto the hat
  • TIES/ BRAIDS are worked directly onto the bottom of the earflaps on the last round you will complete.
  • Perfect for gifting or selling: These hats fly off my craft table!

NOTE: Please supervise at ALL times when baby and toddlers are wearing this hat!

Crochet Hat Size Chart

I have added in Approximate sizes. I highly recommend that you measure around the widest part of the baby’s head

Amount of Yarn & Materials you will require to crochet this hat

  • YARN – Chose a nice soft yarn in DK weight yarn, 2 strands held together for each size you will need
  • 0-3 months – 100 grams (1 Ball 100 Grms) Plus for POMPOM
  • 3-6 months = 125 grams, (1.25 balls of 100 grms) PLUS FOR POM POM
  • 6- 12 months – 150 grams (1.5 balls of 100grms) PLUS FOR POM POM
  • 12-18 months – 2 balls ( 2 balls of 100 grams) PLUS FOR POM POM

If making pompoms please adjust how much yarn you will need for hat AND pom poms

Materials Needed

  • DK weight yarn, two strands held together
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Measuring tape
  • Optional: Pom pom maker for finishing touch

Abbreviations and Terms: US crochet terminology

  • ch -chain
  • dc double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • slst – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sc2tog – single crochet two together
  • sc3tog – single crochet three together
  • FPDC- front post double crochet
  • BPDC – back post double crochet
  • BLsc – back loop single crochet

What is Back Loop Single crochet – blsc?

Back loop single crochet (blsc) means you insert your hook only into the back loop of the stitch (the loop furthest from you), rather than under both loops. This creates a subtle ridge and adds stretch or texture—perfect for edging around the front and back of the hat

Working the LAST round of the Hat /finishing

Making sure the Right side of the hat is facing you, once you have completed the 2nd earflap you will chain a length for the braids, slip stitch back along the chain, working single crochet into the side of the earflap evenly, and Back Loop Single Crochet, in each stitch along the front of the hat and at the back of the hat.

Why is there no stitch counts for the ribbing of the hat?

I have gone with the Hegith of HAT measurement for hat length from the top of the hat to the last row worked. My tension is quite loose, and I can reach the measurement before someone whose tension is tight. SO Please follow the Measurements
