How to Work Single Crochet (sc) in the Back Loop Only (BLO)

Single crochet in the back loop only (BLO) creates a stretchy, ribbed texture that is perfect for crochet hats. Here’s how to do it:
Insert your hook into the back loop of the next stitch. Instead of going under both loops, insert the hook under only the back loop.
Yarn over (YO) and pull up a loop. You will have two loops on your hook.
Yarn over (YO) again and pull through both loops on your hook.
Repeat across the row, working into the back loop only of each stitch.
Turn your work and continue working in BLO for the desired length of your hat.
This technique gives the fabric a stretchy feel, making it perfect for a snug-fitting crochet beanie.
