How to get NO gaps in your Crochet Plushies and amigurumis
This is the crocheter’s secret to NO HOLES or gaps in your plushies.
If you want tight, gap‑free stitches in your plushies, this is the secret: work your single crochets using YARN UNDER instead of the traditional YARN OVER.
Using the yarn‑under method in amigurumi creates firmer, neater stitches that look like tiny Xs. This tighter structure helps keep your stuffing from peeking through, giving your finished piece a smooth, professional look.
How to Work the YARN UNDER Single Crochet to avoid GAPS in your Chicken
- Insert your hook into the next stitch.
- Bring the yarn UNDER the hook and pull it through the stitch.
- (This replaces the usual yarn‑over step.)
- To finish the stitch, yarn over as normal and pull through both loops on the hook.
That’s it, that one small change makes a huge difference in the look and durability of your amigurumi, and no more stuffing showing through.
Materials you will need for Crocheting a Chicken
- Yarn weight –Soft plush yarn (for a squishy finish) or any medium-weight acrylic if you prefer a smaller chicken. I used James C Brett Flutterby Yarn. You can use any type of yarn compatible with a hook you have chosen to crochet the chicken top ruffle on the head I used a scrap of Aran weight yarn.
- Crochet Hooks Used – I used a 4.5 mm crochet hook for the Flutterby yarn and I would recommend using either 1 or 2 down from the recommended hook Size for your chosen yarn
- Stitch Markers (3) – You will need the marker to keep track of Rounds, and also you will require 2 markers to mark the stitches when crocheting the Chicken’s head.
- Stuffing Fibre Fill for ToysI buy my Stuffing in BULK from Amazon – HERE, When it comes to filling your chicken with stuffing make sure to shape the chicken
- OPTIONAL Safety EYES. You CAN use Saftey Eyes if You wish
- Alternative EYES – Yarn needle I just use black yarn for the eyes, Knot a couple of times over the knot you have just made, then Use your hook to pull through the loose ends of yarn and hide.

TO start the Chicken ch2,
Body (Rounds 1–21)
Start: Ch 2. Work in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to keep track.
- Rnd 1: Work 8 sc into the second chain from hook. (8 sts)
→ Forms the chicken’s crown circle. - Rnd 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (16 sts)
→ Begin increasing the circle. - Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * around. (24 sts)
- Rnd 4: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts; repeat. (32 sts)
- Rnd 5: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts; repeat. (40 sts)

- Rnd 7: 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts; repeat. (56 sts)
→ By now you’ve created the rounded base of the chicken. - Rnd 8–16: Sc in each stitch around. (56 sts)
→ This builds the height of the body. Add stuffing as you go to keep the shape firm and squishy. - Rnd 17: Sc in 5 sts, sc2tog; repeat around. (48 sts)
→ Begin shaping the lower body. - Rnd 18: Sc in each st around. (48 sts)
- Rnd 19: Sc in each st around. (48 sts)
- Rnd 20: Sc in 4 sts, sc2tog; repeat around. (40 sts)
- Rnd 21: Sc in each st around. (40 sts)
Chicken Head Shaping Set up
- Fold the piece in half, using the beginning round marker as the middle back tail reference point.
- Find the center front. Place stitch markers: count 8 stitches back from the front center on one side, and 8 stitches back on the opposite side.
- These 16 stitches across the front will form the chicken’s head section.
Joining:
- Starting from the tail end, hold both sides together.
- Slip stitch along the top, joining the two sides together until you reach the markers.
- You now have 16 stitches left open at the front — this is where the head is worked.
Head Rounds
- Rnd 1 (Head Base): Sc in each of the 16 marked stitches. (16 sts)
→ This forms the base circle of the chicken’s head.- Add safety eyes here if desired (8–10 mm). You can also embroider eyes later with black yarn for a baby-safe option.
- Rnd 2–3 (Head Shaping): Continue working in the round, making sc2tog decreases evenly around. (16 → 8 → 4 sts)
→ This shapes the chicken’s head and closes the top. - Finish: Fasten off. Weave the yarn tail through the last 4 sts and pull tight to close.
Start stuffing now. Before slip stitching the back closed, add plenty of stuffing and shape the body until it’s firm, round, and squishy. Once the seam is joined, it will be harder to add more filling.
Joining:
- Starting from the tail end, hold both sides together.
- Slip stitch along the back seam, joining both sides until you reach the head
Adding the Chicken Features
Create the Eyes as shown – I use a French knot for the eyes
How to make a French Knot -Thread the needle with yarn, and knot the end.
Bring the needle up through the fabric where you want the knot to be
Hold the needle horizontally and wrap the yarn around the needle 3 or 4 times, (The more you wrap the bigger the knot/EYE will be )
insert the needle close to where you pulled up but not the same space, hold your fingers over the wrapped yarn to help ease into a knot, and pull to finish. repeat another side
BEAK – Take a small amount of ORANGE or YELLOW for the BEAK, and sew directly over the front couple of stitches (Make sure this is the center of the head)
Red Head Ruffle
- Attach yarn: Join red yarn at the back of the chicken’s head.
- First ruffle: Ch 3, work 3 dc into the next space, ch 2, then sl st into the same space.
- Second ruffle: Ch 3, 3 dc into the next space, ch 2, sl st into the same space.
- Third ruffle: Ch 3, 3 dc into the next space, ch 3, sl st into the same space.
- Finish: Fasten off and weave in all ends.

How to make your Crochet Chicken Bigger or Smaller
I have crocheted the chicken in Worsted Weight using a 3.5mm hook and the height measured just over 4.5 inches tall and the Flutterby Chicken stands 7.25 inches tall.
Can you crochet this chicken even as a Beginner at Crochet
Can beginners Crochet stuffed animals? YES! DO not be intimidated! There is only a very slight difference between regular crochet and amigurumi.
Amigurumi written patterns have less detail included and often look written in some cases like shorthand abbreviations.
So to help those at the start of their crocheting journeys, I try to add as much information to the patterns to help you through each step. So they may be a bit longer than other patterns.
I also have a small crochet chick pattern, perfect for easter egg hunts, all in one no-sew crochet chicken and baby chick patterns, mostly used as small chicken keychains but the chicks make delightful bag charms or the popular plush crochet emotional support pets

Hey thanks for the question! Recently, TEMU, Shein and other companies have been stealing and selling our Patterns! (putting together kits and such but charging people for them! otfen incomplete) Each pattern I make is original (yes, you can make lots to SELL at markets! ets ). I just mean the big boy companies coming in and mass distribution of my pattern (this disclaimer also helps protect me from those who unfortuantley BUY these kits and come to me for a refund (If the products not entire) as They never bought directly from me the designer!
Thank you so much for asking!
I saw long legs, how did you make them. I would love to try. Thanks so much. I am going to give this a shot🐾
no Iv enot made legs for the chickens but you could follow the LEGS for the Leggy frog pattern on my website HERE
Hello,
My granddaughter found and asked me to make your really cute No Sew Chicken, she wants two of them! So far I’ve been able to get through the pattern quite well, thanks to your clear instructions. I’m working on the last thing to add…the beak! The smallest thing is giving me the most trouble! 😊 I just can’t figure out how to get it symmetrical and finish it off. Any advice for me?
Thanks for sharing this too cute pattern, and your help.
😊
Thank you so much for your kind words. I love this crochet chicken too! The beak is sewn on, I usually insert the yarn and needle through the BACK of the head towards the front here I want the BEAK to start. Then when finished sewing the beack i return to where i started and tie the starting end to the finishing end at the back of the head comb, and hide ends. I think the best way to make the BEAK is to hold the chicken facing you, head towards using the COMB you made as the center line, and make the beak 1 or 2 rows down from the eyes. simply by inserting the orange yarn a few times
Made this today. Perfect pattern, very detailed. I put Sand in a Bag and small rocks into the stuffing an made a doorstop. It looks so cute and is practical! I have crocheted way to many plushies so this is a good solution. Might do a bigger one as a cushion soon.
Thankyou SO much we love our crochet chicken pattern too and weve made doorstops with it! How amazing Lisa
