How to Crochet a Windspinner / How is a Crochet Spiral Made and How Does It Work / How to crochet a hanging spiral?

A crochet spiral is created by working in continuous rounds or rows, increasing stitches at regular intervals. As you add more stitches in each round (or row), the fabric begins to curl and form a spiral shape.
This technique is similar to a hyperbolic crochet spiral, (Read about hyperbolic crochet at the end of this post)Here the increases happen rapidly, causing the fabric to grow exponentially and curl outward. The more you increase the number of stitches in each row, the tighter and more pronounced the spiral becomes.

Bee-Themed Hanging Spiral Crochet Wind Spinner – A Fan Favorite

I’ve found that themed wind spinners—especially the bee windspiners and sunflower windspinners—attract the most attention at craft events.

They’re cheerful, colorful, and spin beautifully, with these helpful tips.

You can make the windspinners as long or short as you’d like—just increase or decrease the starting chain length.

My sweet spot length ive found tends to be between 60 and 100 chains (plus one for turning), which gives the spinner enough weight to twirl nicely in a breeze without being too heavy to rotate.

How do I get my wind spinner to spin?

These are my helpful tips for crocheting Wind Spinners That Actually Spin
Getting your crochet wind spinner to spin beautifully takes more than just following the pattern.
These tips will help ensure your spinner curls correctly, hangs well, and catches the breeze just right.
* To maintain a consistent spiral direction, start each row from the same side.
After completing the spiral, gently twist it by hand to shape a uniform curl.
* Leave a long tail at the end of each row; these can be used for decoration or to subtly balance the spinner.
Instead of placing a lightweight, like a crochet bee, at the bottom, attach it to the top. This helps distribute weight more evenly and improves balance.
* Consider adding tassels or beads at the bottom to enhance the appearance and add weight, which will help the spinner hang straighter and spin more effectively.
* When hanging your wind spinner, use a swivel clip or fishing swivel* This allows it to rotate freely without twisting the yarn or string.
* Position your wind spinner in a lightly breezy area. If the wind is too strong, it may cause the spinner to sway side to side instead of spinning properly.
* If you don’t have a swivel, you can use a single strand of fine yarn or fishing line to hang the spinner, as this minimizes friction and helps it rotate more freely.
* If your spinner isn’t rotating well, check for imbalances, the BEE at the bottom of your wind spinner or tassel should be attached directly to the FIRST ROW at bottom or the wind is too windy.
* Small adjustments to the hanging setup or design details can greatly improve its spinning performance..fishing swivels how to make a windspinner spin

Materials and What you need to crochet a Windspinner

To recreate the bee wind spinner shown in the images:

what is the best yarn for a windspinner?

  • I prefer and Double Knit / light worsted weight type of yarn (1x Yellow, 1x Black – approx. 100g ball in total), OR in colors of your choice, DO not use different weight yarns, they should be similar weight yarns
  • Different hook sizes can be used my preference is 3.5o mm Crochet Hook or a 4.0 mm hook (Use the corresponding crochet hook size as recommended on the yarn label)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • YOu will also need to visit the BEE crochet Pattern HERE for the BEE

NOTES: If your spinner isn’t rotating well, it may be due to strong wind, a heavy design, or an unbalanced structure.

If you use a thicker weight yarn, that can slow down the spinability of the spinner

Try hanging it from a fine yarn thread or use a fishing swivel to allow smooth rotation.

LEAVE the LONG tail of Row 4 for securing the swivel to later, and Tie off all ends weaving in securely.

If the Windspinner is all curled up, then you need to start at the TOP and wind carefully into discs that sit on top of each other! Follow the steps below to see how to keep the spiral discs straight!

How to Keep the Edges of Your Crochet Wind Spinner Flat

One challenge when making crochet wind spinners is ensuring that the edges remain flat and aligned, especially as the spiral begins to curl. To help maintain a smooth, even shape, here’s a simple method you can use:
* Lightly Spray the Edges – After completing your wind spinner, lightly mist the edges with water using a spray bottle. This will help relax the yarn and make it more pliable, allowing you to shape it more easily.
* Press with a Heavy Book – Once the edges are dampened, lay the wind spinner Discs on top of the discs on a flat surface. Place a heavy book or another flat, weighted object on top to gently press the edges down. This will help the spiral stay aligned and prevent any unwanted curling or warping.
* Let it Dry FULLYTO Prevent Curly Surfaces Leave the wind spinner to dry under the book for a few hours or until completely dry. As it dries, the yarn will hold its shape, ensuring that the edges remain flat and your wind spinner retains its clean, spiral form.
This method is a great way to achieve a crisp, well-defined spiral shape for your wind spinner, making it look professional and polished when hung.windspinner all ready to hang

Fun Facts about Crocheting Spirals aka Hyperbolic Crochet

Did you know that crocheting a wind spinner uses the principles of hyperbolic crochet, the same mathematical term and technique that creates the curly shapes seen in coral reefs and lettuce leaves

While many crocheters might wonder how to crochet a windspinner to make for its simple charm and visuals

They may not realize that the very technique used—adding stitches at regular intervals to create the spiral—echoes the principles of hyperbolic crochet.

This connection to the mathematical concept of negative curvature adds an extra layer of wonder to an already delightful project.

It’s fascinating to think that by crafting these playful spinning decorations, we’re unconsciously tapping into the same geometric principles that shape coral reefs and lettuce leaves in nature. It’s crafting and science. So those of us (Me included) who say ‘oh im not good at Maths!

Let it be known Hyperbolic crochet is rooted in hyperbolic geometry, a branch of mathematics that explores curved spaces and is part of non-Euclidean geometryI LOVE decorating my garden with these crocheted windspinners! Heres are some more of my favourite free windspinner patterns.
