This isn’t just about one design—this simple layout works for any crochet square that you want to turn into wearable crochet crossover bag you’ll actually want to use.

For this tutorial, we’re using a two-color crochet sunflower square.

The center is made with just two quick rounds, forming a 12-petal flower that’s both bold and beginner-friendly. It’s easier than the well-known Sunburst Granny Square, and just as eye-catching.

By popular demand, I’ve added instructions showing how to square off the flower center to make a full granny square, perfect for bag projects, cardigans, afghans, or anything else you’re dreaming up. This layout also works well if you want to add a fabric lining or sew in a zipper.

This free crochet pattern is ad-supported and includes a helpful step-by-step photo tutorial. If you’re a beginner, I recommend reading the full post before starting—I’ve included all the important tips and layout steps to help you finish your bag confidently.

The best part? This cute granny square bag is made with just two sunflower squares. Add a long strap and it becomes a lightweight crossbody bag, roomy enough to hold your phone and wallet securely while you’re out and about. It’s the perfect handmade gift for trendsetters, festival-goers, or anyone who loves one-of-a-kind accessories.

With just a few squares and some basic crochet skills, you’ll create a sunflower bag that shows off your creativity, skill, and personal style—while keeping things practical and fun.

Note: I’ve also included instructions on how to extend the sunflower square into a full granny square, ideal for cardigans, afghans, or other bag layouts. If you want to explore more crochet bag designs, check out my different crochet bag layouts.

What Yarn Should You Use for the Sunflower Square?

You can use any yarn and a compatible hook for this sunflower square. Keep in mind that the finished size of your square will vary depending on your yarn weight and hook size—bigger yarn and hook mean a larger square, and vice versa.

Yarn Color Choices for the Sunflower Square

For this tutorial and pattern, I used:

  • Two strands of DK weight brown yarn for the flower center
  • Two strands of DK weight yellow yarn for the sunflower petals
  • Aran weight yarn for squaring off the sunflower center and the rest of the bag

Hook Size

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook (US I-9)
  • Pattern is written using US crochet terms

Special Stitch: Treble Crochet Cluster (Tr Cluster)

The treble crochet cluster is made by working 3 treble crochet stitches together. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops (you now have 2 loops left on hook). Do not finish this treble crochet—leave the last loop on your hook.
  2. Repeat step 1 two more times in the same stitch (you will have 3 unfinished treble crochets on your hook).
  3. Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook to complete the cluster.

Sunflower Crochet Square Pattern STARTS HERE

This pattern starts with the sunflower flower center and shows you how to turn it into a full granny square—perfect for making a stylish crossover bag with a long strap.

In BROWN (center of sunflower)

Rnd1: Chain 4. Work 12 Treble crochet into the first chain. join with a slip stitch to finish and fasten off. (12sts)

JOIN NEW COLOR in ANY stitch from the previous round.

Rnd 2: 1st daisy petal: ch4, (the chain 4 at the beginning of the round is counted as the FIRST Trc of the cluster) Continue with making the treble Crochet cluster. ch 2,

Working In the next stitch make a 3 Treble Crochet cluster, and in each remaining stitch around for a total of 12 petals, ch 2, and join with a slip stitch at the top of the initial ch 3 and fasten off.

TO Turn the crochet Flower into a Square

Join Main Colour into ANY chain 2 space (I used GREEN)

This is how your FIRST side should look

Rnd 3: Chain 4 to start (counts as FIRST Double Crochet of the 3Double crochet groups all worked into the same space.) 2 Double Crochets into the SAME space, in the NEXT ch2 space work 3 Double Crochet stitches, in the NEXT ch 2 space, work (3 Treble crochets, Ch2, 3 Treble Crochets = CORNER MADE), *3 Dc into the next ch 2 space, (TWICE) (3 Treble crochets, Ch2, 3 Treble Crochets = CORNER MADE)* repeat until end. slip to the top of the chain to join.

FASTEN OFF FOR BAG HERE – – Or

IF you wanted to ADD more rounds to your Square using the granny stitch you simply continue working as above increasing by 1 3dc cluster per side per round. however, for the purposes of this bag tutorial, I am only having 1 round of Granny Stitch.

To start turning your Granny Square into a bag.

Using the same hook size and yarn

Join yarn at the top of your bag on the chain of chain 2.  (working on 3 sides ONLY of your square (side, Bottom, side – leaving a row unworked this will be the TOP of the bag)

Sc in each stitch around, At the corners work 2 sc INTO the corner 2 chain sts,  the AST side unworked and turn to work 2 more rows of sc (3 Rows, 3 sides around with 2sc corners ) Total.

Fasten off.

Crocheting the BACK of the BAG:

Join Yarn at the Bottom corner of WS facing you. Work sc in each stitch across, Ch1, TURN, (20 sts) Continue working in these 20sts, turn and ch1 at the end of each row until the second half you have just made folded over meets the top of the Sunflower Square. Fasten off

How to Add a Lining to Your Crochet Bag

I prefer to hand sew the lining onto the crocheted piece all in one go, this prevents the lining from pulling out when it is being used.

I used a tshirt material and cut out the shape of the bag leaving a few cm between the actual square and the lining.

I find the best way to sew it is to hold the material and as you are sewing tuck the few extra cms under the piece to hide, DO NOT sew it edge to edge as you will need to crochet through the SIDES to join later.

Ensure you are sewing it to the WRONG SIDE (BACK) of the crochet.

Joining the SIDES of the Crochet Bag

Join yarn at the bottom fold of the bag. Make a Sc through BOTH sides of your piece and continue in single crochet evenly up the sides joint the back side as you go.

Repeat for the second side but start at the top of the bag ensuring you are working on the RS. Once completed weave in these ends.

How to Crochet the Top of the Bag

Note: Here you are simply working 3 single crochet rounds working around both the Top front and top Back of the bag to join, Stitch count is not important but makes sure your stitches are even on both sides.

First Round of Single crochet around the TOP of your BAG – (continue in sc for 3 rounds)

To start Top: Join yarn at any corner and sc into each st or space evenly around working over the seamed joins as you go.

NOTE: I hid the MESSY END of the Chord in the middle of the tassel see how to make this below.

How to Make a Twisted Chord for a Crochet Bag

I Measured the Length I wanted my bag strap to be so it sat just at my hip. DOUBLE that measurement. Take 6 or more strands of yarn this double length, either secure one end or get someone to hold it for you, and start twisting the yarn strands together.

Once you feel you have twisted it tightly enough (it may start trying to twist back on itself! This is definitely enough)

Holding the 2 ENDS TOGETHER, let the 2 sides twist naturally back together, into a single twisted cord and smooth out by running your hand up and down it several times, TIE the FREE ENDS together

I then made a simple Yarn Tassle – Taking the main yarn of your choice wind the yarn no less than 20 times around a 4 or 5-inch piece of cardboard. Thread some yarn through the top and secure with a knot, CUT The other END, then wrap your yarn about 3/4 inch of the way down to create the tassel.

Attaching the strap to your bag

Sew the very end twisted parts to the sc rounds you made at the top. Sew up and down these 3 rows through the bag handle several times to secure.

I hid the messy ends of the cord in the middle of the tassel. And your all done to enjoy your new crochet bag.
