This is an easy written FREE crochet Pattern to help you crochet a beautiful sunflower for attaching to a blanket, use as a coaster, or as I am going to do put it into a frame to display in my home office

What Materials you will Require to crochet the Sunflower

For the Large Petal crochet sunflower, I used a Hook of 4.00mm I used Double knit yarn *(af) for the center and flower petals; however, I think nice thick wool would work just as well for sunflower granny square patterns.

  • If you are using a thinner yarn the ends of the petals WILL turn up so you will probably will need to pin down and spray the leaves (I use hairspray)
  • If putting them onto a canvas (without a protective layer going over the top) I will use spray starch to keep the petals flat.

How to Crochet a sunflower

  1. Ch2, Make 8 sc into the FIRST chain on the hook (8 SC)
  2. 2sc in each stitch around, slip to join, ch1, (16 SC)
  3. (*2 sc in next stitch, sc in next*) repeat * *, slip to join, ch1 (24SC)
  4. (*2sc in next stitch, sc in next 2 sts*) repeat * *, slip to join (32SC)
  5. Sc in each stitch around
  6. Fasten off. weave in ends.

How to crochet the SunFlower Petals

  1. Join Yellow yarn color into any stitch from round 5
  2. Chain 12
  3. Slip stitch back into the 3rd chain from your hook, working back along the chain just made.
  4. (*1sc, 1hdc, and DC into each of the next remaining chains until the last chain*),
  5. Skip 1 stitch from the last brown round and Slip stitch into the next stitch, (leaving 1 stitch between petals of the brown round)
  6. repeat step 2- 5 for the rest of the petals.
  7. FINISH HERE for just 1 Layer of petals.

SO you guys loved the sunflower applique but wanted to know how to turn the sunflower center into a SQUARE for incorporating it into sunflower granny square patterns.

How to Turn the Crochet Sunflower into a Granny Square

Taking the same hook size you used for the sunflower center, and the same yarn thickness.

Step 1: Join Yarn and Form Chains Between Petals

  1. Join yarn into the top of any petal (where the slip stitch is located at the top center of a petal).
  2. Ch 3, then slip stitch into the top of the next petal.
  3. Repeat this pattern of Ch3, slst until all 8 petals are connected with chain-3 spaces between them.
  4. You should now have 8 chain-3 loops, one between each petal.

🔹 Step 2: Create Corners Around Petals

  1. From your last slip stitch (after joining all 8 petals), chain 5 (this will form the first corner).
  2. Then, do the following 8 times:
    • Slip stitch into the next petal’s top,
    • Chain 3
  3. Once you’ve done this 8 times, you’ll have 8 chain-3 loops and one chain-5 loop (the corner) at the beginning.
  4. Repeat Step 2 for the remaining corners/petals until the motif becomes square or has the intended number of corners (usually 4 corners for squares).
  5. After completing the round, slip stitch into the first petal where you started to join the round.

SQuaring it off : If you want to join a new colour you can Start in any ch-3 space.

  • Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Make 2 more double crochets in the same ch-3 space.
  • In the next ch-3 space, make 3 half double crochets (hdc).
  • In the next 3 ch-3 spaces, make 2 single crochets (sc) in each space.
  • In the next ch-3 space, make 3 half double crochets (hdc).
  • In the next ch-3 space, make 3 double crochets (dc).
  • Now you’re at the corner (the ch-5 space). In that corner, work:
  • 3 treble crochets (tr), chain 3, 3 treble crochets (tr) All in the same ch-5 space.
