The Crochet Sunflower in a Crochet Flower Bouquet

Pattern Summary

The sunflower is worked in separate layers: the centre, then two rounds of petals that give the flower its big, bold look. It’s all in the layering—it makes the flower look fuller without being complicated. If you’re confident with double crochet and working in the round, you’ll have no trouble with this one.

We are going to show you how to crochet a simple 3D amigurumi sunflower using this free crochet pattern.

You will find the step-by-step written pattern and image tutorials to help you crochet your own sunflowers.

Mix up the petal colours—sunflowers come in all kinds of shades, from golden yellow to burnt orange and even burgundy.

Add a stem and some wired leaves if you’re making a bouquet or table centrepiece.

What Yarn to use when crocheting Sunflowers?

I highly recommend a Double knit yarn. My favorite yarn to use for crocheting the sunflower petals has to be a ball of yellow cotton feeling yarn I picked up from a store I was visiting recently.

Below, you’ll find the full step-by-step written pattern to crochet your own large sunflower.

This 3D sunflower design works up beautifully and adds a bright, cheerful touch to any space. It makes a lovely handmade gift—or just a joyful little project to enjoy for yourself.

If you sell at craft fairs or run an Etsy shop, these crochet sunflowers are always a hit. They’re quick to make, eye-catching on a stall, and one of those items that never stays in stock for long

The Sunflower is crocheted in pieces for the middle and then sewn together to join, with slight stuffing inserted. Adding the yellow leaves of the flower.

(I have also made Green leaves on the back of the sunflower using the alternative unworked stitches for the yellow petals! this is completely up to you if you wish to make the green leaves.

If making the sunflower for a full crochet flower bouquet I do not create the green leaves as they can become bulky when all put together.

What You’ll Need to Crochet a Sunflower

Here’s everything you’ll need to make your large 3D crochet sunflower:

  • Optional: Starch Spray or Steam Block – Helps shape and hold the petals in place, especially if you’re displaying the flower upright.
  • DK Yarn – Yellow for the petals, brown for the centre, and a little green if you’d like to add leaves or a stem.
  • Crochet Hook – I used a 3.5mm hook for a tighter finish, but a 4mm works well too depending on your tension and yarn choice.
  • Tapestry Needle – For weaving in ends and sewing the parts together.
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing – Just a small amount for shaping the flower centre.
  • Wire or Wooden Skewer Stick – To support the stem if you want your sunflower to stand upright in a vase. Use a sturdy floral wire or a wooden kebab skewer.
  • Colors I used for my sunflowers – Yellow and dark Brown Yarn, or contrasting colour of your choice, I used DK weight to suit minus 1 size of recommended hook for yarn weight, You can use any colors you wish.
  • Brown – Sunflower Center
  • Yellow – Petals
  • Green –  Back Center Piece and stalk

NOTES: be sure to read all the instructions above before starting. Gauge is NOT important

We will now join both sides together, By working through both pieces and using YELLOW yarn to create the Petals.

Take 1 BROWN piece and 1 Green Piece with the Wrong SIDES facing each other (so the Right sides are showing)

NOTE *you can pin these together to help ensure you are hitting the right stitches on both sides when you are creating the Petals.

You will be working through Both top loops of the BROWN and 1 BACK loop of the GREEN side to join them together! (leaving the last loop of stitch unworked, you will work the GREEN LEAVES into this loop later on)

Step 3: how to crochet a large sunflower step by step - Large Sunflower Crochet Pattern Free

IN YELLOW With the Front side FACING YOU

Join Yarn in any of the top stitches of the brown, and the Touching Loop Of the GREEN  by pulling through the yellow yarn from the green side to the brown side  (making sure both sides are equal)

Create the first petal

(work ALL stitches for the petal into the same space)

* Chain 4,  TREBLE Crochet into the SAMES space, ch3, join back into the first ch made, (Picot made), Trc back into the same space, ch4, slip st into the same space, (1 Petal Made).

slip stitch INTO the NEXT  2 sts,  (REPEAT Around for each Petal)

as you get near to the end, slip some stuffing into the sunflower to pad out the center.

Complete around, slip stitch join to the beginning FIRST petal made.

Green Leaves

are basically made in the SAME way on the BACK of the sunflower. (just alternate where the Petals are made i.e the opposite of the slip stitches of petals make a green leaf)

with work facing you Join green yarn to any unworked green back loop at the back of the sunflower
*working all into the same space (Ch3, TrC, ch3, slip into first chain {picot made}, ch3, slip st all worked into the same space), slip st into the next 2 sts, * repeat around

STEM

In GREEN yarn,
Ch2, work 6 single crochet into the first chain (6 sts), This can be really tricky so if you need a bit more room you can Ch2, 7sc into the first chain)

working in rounds and do NOT join,  complete as many rounds as you need for the length you require for the stem.

If you feel it needs to add tiny bits of stuffing a few rounds at a time to help straighten the stem.
FASTEN OFF and leave a length to sew to the flower later to side until the next step is complete.

You are now going to use a piece of wire, curl one END into a spiral inserting this into the Head of the Sunflower to stabilize the flower head to lay flat.

insert the wire by twisting around the wire spiral and thread through the stem.

Sew the STEM to the Back of the middle GREEN side of the Flower to finish.

If you find the Head of the Sunflower a bit floppy. I will use a Wooden skewer inserted all the way up the STEM to the Top of the Sunflower.
