Granny Square Hooded Scarf Crochet Pattern
Tell me Who doesn’t appreciate something with pockets? Recently, I was asked to create a custom order for a Granny Square hooded crochet scarf pattern, and it’s been so fun seeing how popular these have become.
This versatile and cozy accessory doubles as both a scarf and a hood, making it a perfect blend of fashion and functionality, with added instructions for POCKETS!
Crocheted exactly like the original granny square Balaclava, using the same basic stitches of the classic granny square but they wanted a scarf with pockets so as to wrap around their neck and face, making it super cosy!

The Granny Square Balaclava Crochet Pattern
This is a fun and popular custom order for a balaclava hood for Skiers to wear as they take on the slopes!
They’re not just a stylish accessory but also super practical, especially for skiers and anyone who loves to begin wrapped up in style for the winter.

For the Hooded Scarves Granny Square, I used the basic Granny Square Pattern
- Yarn – 2 strands of DK worked together, or scrap yarns worked together
- Crochet Hook: 6.50 mm
- tapestry needle
- And the Basic Granny Square worked for 4 ROUNDS in alternating colours.
- Each Square Measured 6 x 6 inches When completed BEFORE the edging was added in the final completion steps.

- SIZE of Granny Square: The finished square MUST sit comfortably on top of your head, covering it! Mine was 6 inches across in width.
- What size is the Scarf
:The width of the Larger scarf is 80 INCHES across. So if making for a smaller person Id choose the smaller layout below.
Remember: You will also add some stitches around the finished hood and scarf. once its all put together. YOu can add as many rows as you wish to finish your hooded scarf off
You can USE ANY Granny Square crochet pattern to make this hooded scarf just As Long as you make the squares to fit the top of your head !
- WITHOUT POCKETS: I have included ideas below for different layouts for the scarf and it is totally up to the individual how you like the squares lined up
- I Liked the TOP layout with 14 Granny squares, without pockets or 16 with pockets
- WITH POCKETS: I choose the bottom layout for the hooded scarf using 17 Granny squares
Join the Pockets by following the steps below BUT holding the 2 squares together and working through BOTH squares to join! Work (2sc, ch1, 2SC) in EACH corner, this helps to let the corners lay flat.
Steps to Assemble and Sew the Granny Squares to make the Hooded crochet scarf
- Lay Out the Squares:
- Arrange your granny squares in the desired layout. For the hooded scarf, you can use either the top layout with 14 squares or the bottom layout with 13 squares.
Join the Squares: You can see several ways to join the granny squares here or
- Use the whip stitch or slip stitch to join the squares together. Here’s how to do it:
- Insert your hook or needle through the corner stitches of both squares.
- Pull the yarn through and continue stitching through the corresponding stitches of both squares until you reach the end.
- Fasten off and weave in the ends.
How to Create the Hood:
The hood is made from 3 squares as shown; sewing these seams together.
1 for the TOP of the head, 2 for the sides of head.
Attach the Hood to the Scarf:
Join the number of Granny squares as shown in the layouts above together for the scarf.
- Align the bottom edge of the hood with the top edge of the scarf.
- Sew the hood to the scarf using the same method as joining the squares.
Finish the Edges of the Hood and Scarf And JOIN THE POCKETS as you go
- Once all the squares are joined and the hood is attached, you can add a single crochet border around the entire scarf for a neat finish.
- join yarn in ANY of the stitches at the back of the neck. Use a single crochet or double crochet stitch to create the border. working evenly along the stitches of the squares, (I sometimes will put a little HDC if I feel it needs it at the joining of the squares to keep the line even,
- AT the LAST Granny Square, of the first side of the scarf, line up the POCKET square Right side facing out!) and continue working single crochet, joining the pocket to the last granny square of the scarf.
- When you get to THE CORNERS, work ( 2sc, ch1, 2sc ) in corner chains
- Continue working up the scarf towards the hood; work 3sc TOGETHER when you get to where the HOOD meets the scarf, and work single crochet evenly along the HOOD.
- 3SC TOGETHER at the corner of hood and scarf on the opposite side,
- Continue working evenly down the scarf towards the LAST granny square of the scarf and repeat as for the FIRST pocket.
Weave in the Ends:
- Use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends to ensure a clean and polished look
