ย
and was asked by a customer if I could crochet a Long Sleeved mesh Top for a young man! I love a challenge so here it is.
ย
If you just remember the Open mesh stitch pattern is simply a repeated combination of chain 2 sts, skip 2 sts and treble crochet, and once you have the first row done.
ย
ย
The increases for the raglan shoulder is crocheted directly into the previous rounds treble, ch2, treble crochet increase
You will then proceed to increase in these 4 points for the total of stitches required.
I will also add in a handy size chart for you to crochet this as big or small as you require.
ย
I worked up the sample used throughout this pattern for a teenager as a loose fit, with more positive ease: slightly oversized fit, larger than your actual bust/chest measurement! so please make sure you follow the size measurements made to fit you.
Approximately 4″ to 6 (10 to 15cm) more than your actual bust/chest measurement.
If you are confident and want to custom-make this you will need these measurements
- ย Chest/Bust โMeasure around the fullest part of the chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly
- ย Center Back Neckโto Wristโ With the arm straight, measure from the back base of the neck, across the shoulder, and along the arm to the wrist
- ย Back Waist LengthโMeasure from the most prominent bone at the base of the neck to the natural waistline.
- ย Cross BackโMeasure from shoulder to shoulder.
- ย Arm LengthโWith the arm slightly bent, measure from armpit to wrist.
- ย Upper ArmโMeasure around the widest section of the upper arm located above the elbow.
- ย Armhole DepthโMeasure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit.
- ย WaistโMeasure your waist at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
- Wrist CircumferenceโMeasure around the widest part of the wrist (I like my tops very loose, IF you want a Fluted Bell sleeve you can achieve this by increasing the hook size in every few rows as you work the sleeve down.
- ย HipโMeasure the widest part of your lower hip. Again, If you have achieved the Bust/chest measurement but want a slightly wider hem You can achieve this by increasing several bigger hook sizes as you work the body.
The size measurements provided For reference and are approximate

The Crochet mesh top pattern is written in US terms
ย
materials used
ย
Iย used just short of 400g of double-knit yarn
5.50 mm hook to achieve gauge.
Gauge
height 5 x (treble crochet, ch2, skip 2) block squares = 4 inches
width in rows 4 x (treble crochet, ch2, skip 2) block squares = 3 inches
ย
Please note I do crochet extremely loosely so please always check full measurements as you are making the top.
Abbreviationsย
vst inc = increase vst, you will increase by working (trc, ch2, trc all into the same space) into a specified chain in rnd 1 and the center of previous rounds (vst inc, chain 2)
ย
trc = treble crochet
ย
ch chain stitches,
ย
skip 2 skip 2 chain stitches from the previous round
ย
slst to join, slip into the first chain 4 of your ch6 at beginning of the round.
ย
General notes:
The mesh top is worked from the top down. you will start at the NECK.
ย
ย
ย
The starting chain will be made and slipped to join to make a circle.
ย
As you work the first round you will increase v stitch divided into back, shoulder/ front/shoulder where you will increase with a v stitch (treble crochet, chain 2, treble crochet) worked into the chain of the previous round 2 increase space.
ย
Increase vst = increase by working (trc, ch2, trc all into the same space) into the center of previous rounds v st increase
ย
You will crochet the next rounds of treble crochet worked directly into the top of previous rounds of treble crochet
ย
chain 6 st the start acts as counts as first treble crochet and ch2
ย
ย
once the first row is complete use markers to keep your place for the increases, and it is actually a very repetitive pattern, just ensure you always make chain 2 after every treble crochet, ensuring the (coroner increases (trc, ch2, etc) are made into the chain 2 space of previous rounds increase.
The long-sleeved mesh top-down pattern
ย
ย
ch120, to start
(for all sizes, however, adjust hook size for bigger sizes) slip stitch to join.
ย
The neck rounds 1 and 2 look tiny but believe me they are just fine, trust the process.
ย
Chain 6 to start (counts as first treble crochet of first round plus ch2, and acts as last treble crochet of last shoulder increase)
ย
* skip 2, trc, ch2, * repeat * to * 11 times (back)
ย
skip 2, ( trc, ch2, trc, all worked in next chain, v stitch increase ) (corner, place marker here in the middle of the ch2) * ch2, skip 2, trc, * repeat * to * 7 times (shoulder)
ย
( ch2, skip 2, ( trc, ch2, trc), all worked in next chain, v stitch increase )(corner inc made, place marker here in the ch2)
* ch2, skip 2sts, trc * repeat * to * 11 times (back)
ย
ch2, skip 2, (trc ch2, trc ) in same space (corner inc made, place marker here in the ch2)
* ch2, skip2, trc* , * repeat * to * 7 times (shoulder )
ย
( ch2, skip 2, make the last treble crochet into the previous 3rd last st, ch2 and slip st to the 4th chain from the hook of the starting chain to join corner inc made, place marker here in the ch2)
ย
make the last treble crochet into the previous 3rd last st, ch2, and slip st to the 4th chain from the hook of the starting chain to join
ย
Work at end of rnd 2ย (see Pic)ย
ย
ย
you will have 4 v stitch increase corners – Pic above
ย
2 x 8 blocks for shoulders
2 x 12 x blocks for front and back
total 44 spaces around
do not proceed if you do not have these numbers.
ย
ย
Rnd 2:
chain 6 to start, counts as first treble crochet and chain 2 of pattern,
skip 2,*trc, ch2, skip 2, * repeat * to * next v-stitch increase, (back)
ย
(trc, ch2, trc) into the previous rounds v stitch chain 2, ch2,
in the top of next treble crochet of previous rnd* trc, ch2, skip 2, * repeat * to* nxt v-stitch increase (shoulder), finishing with a ch2, working all following ( ) stitches into the next chain 2 space
(trc, ch2, trc) into the previous rounds v stitch chain 2, ch2,
in the top of next treble crochet of previous rnd* trc, ch2, skip 2, * repeat * to* next * nxt v-stitch increase (front)
ย
working all stitches into the next chain 2 space (ch2, trc, ch2, trc, = v stitch inc corner)
* ch2, trc, skip 2, * repeat * to * * nxt v-stitch increase
in the last , chain 2 space work (trc, ch2, trc, ) into the next chain, (corner), ch 2 and slip stitch into the 4th chain from hook
ย
Rnd 3. ch 6, *skip 2, 1tr, ch2* repeat * to * across the back, 1v stitch increase st in ch 2 sp between inc st of previous round, ensuring every treble crochet made has a ch2 space between them, continue in the same pattern for entire round. Slst in 4th chain from hook to join .
ย
Repeat rnd 3 until you reach your desired arm hole depth. To measure this simply measure from beginning round at a diagonal down one complete side of increases for shoulders.
ย
To make the armholes
fold work in half, ensuring corners all meet together
ย
I have also made this for a customer I finished the body HERE working 1 Round of the body Then Jumping straight to crocheting the SLEEVES which made it a crochet mesh top with sleeves.
Continue To make the armholes and body of the sweater
ย
( this round once completed must equal or be bigger than your size chest measurement. If you need to make it bigger then just keep repeating the last few rounds of increases. )
ย
Starting with your usual chain 6 continue working in the established in pattern of (trc, ch2, skip2) work to the first v stitch corner, make the first treble crochet, ch 2 into the first sides ch2 of v stitch (see picture join the armholes)
ย
ย
ย
ย
skip directly over the shoulder [ch2, skip 2, trc squares, leaving these unworked ] to the next v stitch ch2 space, and create the next treble crochet into that chain 2 space, continue working in established pattern, trc, skip 2, ch2, 1 treble, then chain 2, skip to the opposite side corner (the next ch2 space of the new corner v st (tr, ch2, tr corner, ) and make 1 trc into the ch2 space, ch2.ย continue in the established pattern , ( Ch2, sk2, Trc)ย to the next corner, and repeat as for the first armhole.
ย
ย
ย
BODY of Mesh Sweaterย
Continue working in the established pattern starting each round with a chain 6, of (ch2, skip 2, treble crochet) slip to join to the 4th chain from the hook, Continue in each block around the body
repeat until the length of your sweater is achieved for your size.
ย
Mesh top SLEEVES:ย
we are working in shoulder sts, we skipped when making our armholes
ย
ย
RND1 :ย Join yarn and ch6 in any st ( I prefer to make it in any top of treble crochet near the underarm), (1TRC, ch 2, skip 2) in each st around. Slst.
ย
For each size, you should have (17, 19, 21, 23, 25, and 27 TRC)
ย
ย
Rnd 2:ย Repeat the patternย until sleeve measurement is reached: repeat the 1st round.
ย
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
ย
Make 2nd sleeve with the same method.
ย
You can increase or decrease sleeves length by adding or subtracting rounds.
ย
If you would like a bell-shaped fluted sleeve you can easily achieve this by working the sleeves from the elbow down in larger hook sizes.
ย
The Sleeves on the one I made for an olderย teenage boy and he had the longest arms so
ย
Please again always check with the customer or measure your own arm-to-wrist measurements
