Most designs, including this free teddy bear crochet pattern, use amigurumi methods where the pieces are worked in the round, stuffed, and then assembled. And I have included some crochet tips to create neat stitching.

Typically, a crochet teddy bear is made in separate parts head, body, arms, legs, and ears which are sewn together at the end to form the finished toy.

This gives you full control over shaping and positioning, whether you want your teddy sitting, standing, or slightly posed.

Why This Free Crochet Teddy Bear Pattern Works

This is a classic, no-fuss teddy bear design that focuses on what actually works in real life not overly complicated shaping or tricky construction.

  • Made in separate pieces, making it easier to manage and assemble
  • Simple structure that suits beginners but still flexible for experienced crocheters
  • Can be customised depending on yarn, stuffing, and finishing

If you’re more experienced and prefer a seamless look, you can join the arms and legs as you crochet.

The video tutorial below is included to guide you through connecting the limbs smoothly. Only if you are confident in connecting limbs and working continuously on the pattern. Beginners, I highly suggest sewing the parts on.

This flexibility is what makes this pattern reliable you can follow it step-by-step or adapt it to your own style.

Pattern Notes

  • This teddy bear can be made using any suitable yarn with the correct hook size for that yarn
  • Using chenille or plush yarn will create a bulkier, softer teddy
  • Using smoother yarn (like standard acrylic or cotton) gives a more defined stitch finish, like the grey teddy shown
  • The final look depends heavily on how you stuff and shape your teddy
  • The teddy is worked in separate pieces and then sewn together, allowing you to position it sitting or standing
  • The pattern uses single crochet and i suggest the yarn under single crochet method for a tighter, neater stitch

What Is the Yarn Under Stitch?

The yarn under stitch is a simple variation of single crochet used in amigurumi to create tighter, neater stitches.

Simply put, use yarn under for the first pull, through instead of the yarn over, then finish with a normal yarn over.

In a standard single crochet, you yarn over the hook.
In this method, you yarn under the hook for the first pull-through.

The result is a tighter fabric with smaller holes and a clean “X” shaped stitch exactly what you want when making toys like this free teddy bear crochet pattern.

Why Use Yarn Under for a Crochet Teddy Bear?

When making soft toys, stitch quality matters more than anything. The yarn under stitch method is Also shown in the video above for joining the limbs

The BEST Stitch for crocheting toys is the yarn under method:

  • Keep stuffing from showing through
  • Create a firmer, more structured teddy
  • Give a smoother, more professional finish
  • Improve stitch consistency across the whole project

This is especially important for amigurumi, where loose stitches can ruin the final look.

Step-by-Step: Yarn Under Single Crochet

  1. Insert your hook into the next stitch
  2. Bring the yarn under the hook (front to back)
  3. Pull up a loop (2 loops on hook)
  4. Yarn over
  5. Pull through both loops

That’s it! The same stitch, just one small change.

Step-by-Step: Invisible Yarn Under Decrease

Professional tip for Decreasing whilst crocheting Toys and amigurumi is the invisible decrease

**Working in the Front loops only + yarn under first pull***

Here’s exactly how to do it using the yarn under method:

  1. Insert hook into the FRONT LOOP of the next stitch
  2. (only the loop closest to you)
  3. Insert hook into the FRONT LOOP of the following stitch
  4. You now have 3 loops on your hook.
  5. Yarn UNDER (not over)
  6. Bring the yarn under the hook from front to back.
  7. Pull through both front loops
  8. You’ll now have 2 loops on your hook.
  9. Yarn overFinish like normal.
  10. Pull through both loops

Using the invisible decrease method leaves No gaps between stitches, no bulky “bump” from traditional decreases, keeps your teddy looking smooth and evenly shaped

Assemble the Body

  • Stuff the body firmly and evenly
  • Sew the head securely onto the body, making sure it sits straight

Attach the Legs

  • Stuff the legs and sew them onto the base of the body

For a sitting teddy bear:

  • Only stuff the legs halfway
  • Flatten the last few rounds
  • Sew the top of legs FLAT to the underside of the body

This helps the teddy sit naturally and keeps it balanced.

Attach the Arms

  • Stuff the arms lightly
  • Position evenly on each side of the body
  • Sew securely in place

I then like to attach the muzzle/Nose into position to ensure everything is centered,

Nose & Facial Features

  • Lightly stuff the nose/ snout with polyfil and sew it securely into position on the centre of the face
  • Using black yarn, embroider the nose and mouth (refer to the image for placement and shape)
  • Attach safety eyes, positioning them evenly on either side of the nose

For baby-safe toys, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes

Attach the Ears

  • Sew the ears onto the top sides of the top of the head
  • Check placement from the front before securing fully to keep them even
