This is a charming little puff stitch snowflake ornament you can whip up in minutes. Want to make them bigger? Start with 5, 6, or 8 crochet puff stitches in the center.

For bigger snowflakes, I made 8 Puff stitches in the center, just adjust the starting chain ring at the start.

My MIL was visiting! And you all know what that means! A quick and easy crochet project was definitely happening.

Beautiful crochet snowflake

She actually started the puff snowflake ornament crochet pattern with a simple circle by winding the yarn several times around her finger, then single crocheting around to create a ring to work into, but leaves the hole in the center! after a few attempts, I preferred to start with a chain circle.

This little crochet puff stitch snowflake pattern is unbelievably simple, and turned out absolutely adorable, and honestly, it’s the kind of crochet project you can’t stop at just making one.

This is a twist on a classic snowflake design and you can add as many puffs in the center as you like.

Start with five for a dainty snowflake using cotton yarn, or go all in like I did with thicker eight for a fuller look add the picot stitches at the points for creating a beautiful crochet snowflake

SPECIAL STITCHES – How to Crochet a Puff Stitch (5 Pulls)

Before we start the snowflake, heres how to crochet the puff stitch itself.

It looks fancy, but trust me, it’s really just a bunch of half-finished half double crochets pulled together into one cute little puff.

For this pattern, we’ll be using a 5-pull puff stitch, meaning we pull up loops five times before closing to create that extra-plump, textured center.

Tip: Keep your pull-up height consistent each time. If your puff looks uneven, you’re probably pulling some loops higher than others just slow down and even them out.

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Crochet Puff Stitch (5 Pulls)

  • Yarn over (YO), insert your hook into the stitch or ring.
  • YO again, pull up a long loop to the height of a double crochet — 2 loops on hook.
  • YO, insert, YO, pull up3 loops on hook.
  • YO, insert, YO, pull up4 loops on hook.
  • YO, insert, YO, pull up5 loops on hook.
  • YO and pull through all 6 loops on your hook (the original loop plus the 5 pulled-up loops).
  • Chain 1 to lock the puff in place. (That’s called the puff lock chain.)

What It Should Look Like

  • Each puff should sit up slightly from your work like a little bubble.
  • If your puff looks flat, add one more pull (6 pulls total).
  • If it looks too chunky or tight, use a bigger hook , and consider using crochet thread for lacy snowflakes
  • The picots are made at the TOP of the puff stitches, by working single crochet and chain stitches
  • These snowflakes do NOT require a magic circle to start. And uses basic stitches, with puff stitches

Materials

you can use ANY mm crochet hook size, and leftover yarn, but remember that thicker yarn like worsted weight yarn, the bulkier your snowflake will be, so id choose a thinner yarn.

For my White Crochet Snowflakes : I used a thin nylon thread with a slight sheen through it, and a 3.00mm crochet hook

Abbreviations US terms

Crochet Puff Stitch Snowflake Pattern

Ch 5, join to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a ring.
(You can use a magic ring, but I prefer the chain circle for a firmer center.)

**Ch 3, then work 1 Puff Stitch into the ring (Yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop) 5 times,
yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook, ch 1 to lock the puff.

* Ch 4, sc into the puff’s lock chain (picot made). Repeat from * 3 more times you’ll have 3 picots around the top of the puff stitch.**

Tip:
If you’d like your snowflake to look fuller, you can make more chains for a bigger circle to start, and simply crochet extra puffs in the center. Just keep the picots the same for each individual puff

For a delicate, classic look, three picots are just right.

How to Stiffen Your Crochet Puff Stitch Snowflakes – Stiffening Methods

Once your puff stitch snowflakes are finished, you’ll want them to hold their shape especially if you plan to hang them or use them as part of your holiday décor. Here are a few easy ways to do that

1. Classic Starch Method (Old-School and Reliable)

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of cornflour (cornstarch) with 1 cup of water in a pan.
  • Heat gently, stirring until it turns slightly thick and clear.
  • Let it cool a little, then dip your crochet snowflake into the starch.
  • Squeeze out the excess (don’t twist!), then pin it flat onto a blocking mat or piece of foam board and stretch those little picots out to nice, even points.
  • Leave it overnight to dry completely.

Pro tip: Lay a piece of plastic wrap or wax brown paper underneath so it doesn’t stick to your board.

2. Quick Fabric Stiffener Spray

  • If you’re in a hurry, use a commercial fabric stiffener (like Stiffy or Aleene’s).
  • Lay your snowflake flat, spray evenly on both sides, shape the points, and let it dry.
  • You can repeat a second coat for extra firmness.

3. White Glue + Water (Budget-Friendly DIY)

  • Mix equal parts white school glue (PVA) and water in a small bowl.
  • Dip your snowflake in, squeeze out gently, and shape it flat.
  • Once dry, it’ll be stiff but flexible perfect for window hangers or tree ornaments.

How to Hang Your Snowflakes

  • Thread Method: Use clear fishing line or fine metallic thread for an invisible hanging effect. Just loop it through one of the picot tips and tie securely.
  • Ribbon or Twine: For a rustic farmhouse feel, use jute twine, baker’s twine, or narrow satin ribbon.
  • Garland: Make a whole chain of crochet puff stitch snowflakes spaced about 4–6 inches apart on a long thread perfect for windows or mantels.
  • Window Display: Hang several at different heights with invisible thread for a floating, frosted look when the light hits them.
  • Tree Ornament: Add a small wooden bead or bell in the center before stiffening it gives that pretty Scandinavian-style finish.
