Trunk & Head Shaping

Row 22: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch,  sc in the next 10sts to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn.
Row 23: Sc2tog, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 24: Sk 1 st, sc in next 7 sts, hdc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog. Do not fasten off.

Finishing the First Side

Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire elephant shape to neaten the edges. (you may need to work 2sc into the corner stitches to stop the corneres curling)
Work sl st around the trunk area to give it definition, then continue up the face with sc.
Join with a sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Second Side (Back Panel)

Repeat the same steps for the second panel.
IMPORTANT: When crocheting the finishing edge around this side, flip the piece so both elephant panels face trunk-to-trunk when joined,  this keeps shaping symmetrical.

IF you are wanting to Attatch a wooden ring, return to the 5 MIDDLE STITCHES of the Elephant and attach yarn,

  • Row 1: ch1, sc in 5sts, TURN, (5sts)
  • Row 2 to Row 10: Ch1, sc in 5 sts (5sts)

Assembly

  • Place both panels wrong sides together.
  • Using either slip stitching around or whip stitch together to 2 sides, sew around the edges, stuffing lightly as you go,  especially in the legs and trunk areas. (SEE below if making a teether)
  • Finish by joining at the starting point. Weave in all ends securely.

How to Turn This Into a Crochet Elephant Teether

If you made the extra length to attatch the wooden ring to turn the elpephant into a teether

  • fold the long piece over the ring, and PIN the edge of the  long piece into position (see pic Below,)  and as you are slip stitching along or sewing around the elephant,
  •  catch ALL layers of the piece as you go.

Elephant Ears (Make 2)

Ch 2
Row 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: 2 sc in each st. Ch 1, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: (1 sc, 2 sc in next st) repeat across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: (2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts) repeat across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: (2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts) repeat across. Ch 1, turn.

To Attach EARS :
Position ears on either side of the head. Use sl st along the straight edge to attach securely, catching just the front loops for a neater finish.

    1. I am so glad you loved the elephant!

  2. Hi Lisa! Thank you so much for this pattern. It’s the perfect addition to a baby shower gift for a friend of mine. Is row 23 missing something or maybe it was supposed to just say sc to last st rather than last 2 sts? I am also wondering if you have instructions on how to crochet the part to attach it to a ring?
