  • This crochet beanie can be made for an adult small with
  • 1 ball of 100grms of chunky yarn,
  • 2 x Balls of 100 grms If wanting a matching pompom or making for bigger sizes
  • and a 6.50mm crochet hook.

How many chains do you need to start the Beanie Hat?

This hat is super stretchy due to the ribbing effect!

  • Check your Hat height for your size in the chart above.
  • You will chain the amount needed to reach the HEIGHT of the hat for your SIZE PLUS adding up to 2 EXTRA Inches to the starting chain in total.
  • So IF you require your hat Height to be 11 inches LONG (before turn-up added),
  • Chain 11 inches + 2 inches = Starting chain to equal 13 inches

Can you crochet this hat using ANY yarn and ANY hook size?

Yes, you can use any yarn and hook to crochet this hat! I recently made a matching crochet set using Aran weight yarn with a 5.0mm hook. Just ensure you follow the instructions for the hat height and hat width! Keeping 6 slip stitches and 3 slip stitches in the alternate ROWS for the Top to remove any bulk from the top of the hat

NOTE: :for the purpose of This pattern, I am crocheting a small adult hat

Abbreviations (US Terms )

ch: chain

BL- slst: slip stitch

BL-sc: Back loop single crochet

BL: back loop

Chain 37 to start

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 6 sl st in the BL of the next 6 sts. Then, BL sc in each st across to the end. Ch 1, turn. (6 sl st, 30 BL sc)

Row 2: BL sc in each of the next 30 sts. Then, make 3 BL sl st in the LAST 3 sts only (leaving 3 sts unworked). Ch 1, turn. (30 BL sc, 3 BL sl st)

Row 3: Make 3 BL sl st in the first 3 sts. Then, BL sc in each of the remaining 30 sts. Ch 1, turn. (3 BL sl st, 30 BL sc)

Row 4: BL sc in each of the next 30 sts. Make 3 sl st in the 3 slip sts from the previous row. Then, make 3 BL sl st in the 3 unworked slip stitches from Row 2. (30 BL sc, 6 BL sl st)

Repeat Rows 1-4 until the width/circumference of the hat reaches your desired measurement.

Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the seams together and gather the top of the hat to sew shut.

Assembly & Finishing Your Rectangle Crochet Hat

Tips for a Neat Finish:

  • Use a yarn needle: This will make it much easier to sew the seams neatly and securely.
  • Weave in ends: Make sure to weave in all the loose ends of your yarn to create a polished look
  1. Fold and Sew Seam:
    • Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise, with the right sides together.
    • Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew along the long edges, making a tube.
  2. Close the TOP Opening: Sewing through the ridges created at the of the top of the hat slip stitches remaining opening closed neatly.
