The All-Ribbed Crochet Hat Pattern is loosely based on a fisherman’s ribbed crochet hat my mother-in-law made for my husband one year and he loved it but it was a bit bulky at the top of the hat.

The All Ribbed Crochet Hat is cleverly crocheted at the top so it sits snugly on the head for maximum warmth.

You can make the starting chain longer to have a lovely thick and warm turn-up brim.

This ribbed crochet hat pattern looks almost knitted but you are creating the knit look effect by working your SLIP STITCHES into the back loops of the previous rows of slip stitches.

Crochet Knit Stitches Easy Crochet ribbing pattern

You need to have quite a loose tension throughout or it will become too hard to fit the hook into the stitches.

The hat is crocheted in Rows which Decrease by 1 stitch at the END of every 2nd ROW (TOP OF HAT) until you have 10 Rows. You will have 10 unworked stitches at the same side in a staggered effect (see Pic)

On the Next Row (Row 11)  you will work the FULL amount of the HATS stitches by working 1 slip st stitch through BOTH LOOPS into each of the unworked stitches left over from the previous row. (see Pic 2 BELOW)

Pic 2: slip stitch UP the unworked stitches of previous rows to get back to the full amount of working stitches before decreases.

How to work out the Length of The Ribbed crochet hat for sizes.

When working out the length of the chain I chain until the Hat Length above and add a few inches for the turn up to the total chains to start with.

The working formula for this hat  is: WIDTH multiplied by 2 (round to the nearest multiple of 5) DIVIDE by 5, multiply by 2 = RESULT

Example 1 :newborn hat size : Hat width = 12 inches multiplied by 2 =24 sts (round number  to the nearest multiple of 5= 25 sts) DIVIDE by the 5 Segments = 5sts multiply by 2  = 10 DECREASE ROW segments (5 decrease sts)

Example 1 :2-5 years old – Hat width = 18 inches,  DECREASE ROW segment is 14 rows (7sts) Hat length = ADD approximately 1.5 inches to total hat height for the turn-up brim starting chain = 8.5′

Materials I used to Crochet the purple hat shown in Pictures

I Love crocheting hats for myself and my husband and I am always looking for different ways to sha[e the crown and STILL have a warm cosy hat.
The Episode Hat is Made with a rib stitch Brim first, then a classic crochet beanie style for the main part of the hat!.
We LOVE this crochet that is for use when we are walking. As the Brim keeps our ears free from the strong winds, yet the Beanie part helps to wick away the sweat as we build up some heat
