Adding Stripes to Your Hat

Adding stripes to your men’s winter beanie crochet pattern is a fun way to customize it and make it stand out

Since the base beanie pattern is worked in rounds with double crochet stitches, stripes are easy to incorporate by changing yarn colors at the start of a round

How to Add Stripes

  • Choose your colors: Pick 2–3 contrasting yarns (e.g., dark grey + bright red, or navy + white, Green or white).
  • Stripe width:
    • For thin stripes, change color every 2 rounds.
    • For bold stripes, change color every 4–6 rounds.
  • Color change technique:
    • On the last stitch of the round, stop before completing the final yarn-over.
    • Pull through with the new color to finish the stitch.
    • Continue the next round with the new yarn.
  • Carry or cut yarn:
    • If stripes are frequent, carry the unused yarn up the inside of the hat.
    • For wider stripes, cut the yarn and weave in ends later for a cleaner finish.
  • Ribbed band option: Keep the ribbed band in a solid color for contrast, or alternate colors for a sporty look.
