This design sits right in the sweet spot between a hooded cowl crochet and a traditional scarf. Crocheted using a modified knit look crochet stitch

It’s warm, stylish, and practical enough for everyday wear exactly how crochet accessories were always meant to be

I wanted the hooded cowl scarf to fold twice around the neck, making it double the warmth, and although I wanted simple stitches i also wanted to create something that looked the SAME on BOTH sides of the fabric of the hooded cowl.

stylish accessory for winter wear

What is the Knit Look Crochet Stitch used in the hooded cowl Pattern

The stitch used is simple, textured, and warm, no HOLES, perfect for this easy hooded cowl crochet pattern.

By sheer accident, I developed a modified herringbone half double crochet stitch, which, no matter what way you wear it, this crochet stitch still looks like a knitted stitch and is always the correct way round.

Unlike other hooded cowls ive made there is a right side and a wrong side, with single crochet or double-crochet stitches.

How to crochet the Modified Half Double crochet Herringbone stitch – (MH‑hdc)

The modified, half double crochet herringbone stitch was born from an accidental disaster at me learning the stitch; but the simplicity of the stitch has blown my mind

  • This is a cross between a half star stitch and a half double crochet.
  • Each ROW is worked exactly the same way.
  • At the beginning of the row and the end of the row, you will work a regular single crochet LOOSLEY, you need to be able to put your crochet hook through the last loop of this stitch for the next stitch to be made
  • when working the MH-half double crochet you will pull UP the yarn over pull through to be the same height as the previous stitch, so you can go back and work the start of the next stitch through the nearest slanted front-facing loop of the previous stitch.

I have made a short video on how to crochet the modified half double herrignbone stitch – you will need to allow ads to have the video play properly

How the Crochet Hooded Scarf Is Made

  • This crochet hooded scarf starts with a foundation chain that matches the length from the top of the head down to the bottom of the neck.
  • The hood is then worked in rows in a U-shape, building around that starting chain to form the hood depth and shape.
  • Once the hood is complete, you work joined rounds around the lower edge of the hood to create an infinity cowl.
  • This cowl is designed to wrap around the neck two times, giving that snug, cosy fit you want from a hooded cowl crochet style.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Bulky weight yarn (I used a slightly lighter Chenille-type bulky yarn that was 8 Wraps per inch)
  • Hook Size: Crochet hook to match your yarn (I used a 5.5 mm crochet hook as I am an extremely loose crocheter, so choose your hook preference and keep within the measurements shown below)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

What type of yarn is best for this project

Stick to classic fibres if you want longevity. Acrylic blends are practical, wool blends bring the heat, and bulky chenille is toasty and warm but not heavy to wear.
