A simple, stretchy ribbed baby hat perfect for donating to hospitals.

After my grandson was born, I was completely touched by all the little knitted and crocheted baby hats donated to the hospital.

The midwives told me that although they receive many, they sometimes run short so I decided I would “pay it forward” and keep a box of hats and booties ready to post whenever a hospital puts out a request.

They said this style of baby hat was perfect as the ribbing (knit 2, Purl 2) gives a nice stretch is super cosy and stretchy for newborns all sizes

I don’t really consider myself a knitter as crochet is my first choice of fiber arts, but I actually learned to knit long before I learned to crochet, from my mum.

My mum was an incredible knitter, and although I’m nowhere near her level, I still love picking up the needles now and then, especially when my hands get sore from crocheting too much. But I can only knit beginner-type patterns.

This wee ribbed hat is my mum’s pattern. She used it for years whenever someone needed a stretchy, snug baby beanie. Recently, while sorting through her things after she passed.

I found many of her scribbled patterns and some of the little creations she made for me and my brothers. It felt like discovering treasure

Easy Ribbed Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

  • Size: Newborn
  • Needles: 4.00mm straight needles
  • Yarn: Baby DK (about 25g — perfect for leftovers)
  • Stitches used: Knit, Purl, K2tog

This hat is wonderfully stretchy, and the length allows you to simply fold up the brim to fit different new

 Instructions

Cast On

Cast on 72 stitches loosely.

Ribbed Section

Knit 2, purl 2 across every row.

Work 44 rows in total.

Crown Shaping (Decrease Rows)

Row 1: (K2, K2tog) repeat across the row

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: (K1, K2tog) repeat across the row

Row 4: Purl

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until only a few stitches remain.

Cut yarn, leaving a 14-inch tail.

  • Finishing
  • Carefully remove the remaining stitches from the needle.
  • Thread the yarn tail through all stitches, gently pull through the stitching around the top to tighten, and weave in the end to secure.
  • Then continue to Sew down the side seam neatly.
  • Weave in ends.
