The Simple, beginner-friendly, free baby booties knitting pattern is worked flat on straight needles (sized for newborn or 0–3 months).
The booties are worked in garter stitch (knit every row) and seamed up the bottom and back at the end.
Made with DK yarn and 4.00 mm straight knitting needles and worked from the cuff down.
You only need a small amount of yarn to make a pair, making these newborn baby booties a lovely quick knitting project.
Booties are knitted FLAT on straight needles, and you will need to ‘pick up stitches from along the sides of the INSTEP
How To: Pick Up Side Stitches for these booties
Step 1 : Lay the bootie flat with the right side facing you.
Step 2: Identify the Edge of the instep and the individual ‘bumps’ on the side
Step 3: Insert the needle into the first Turning BUMP stitch at the SIDE of the 8 sts of the instep
Step 4: repeat step 2, picking up the amount of sts required (do NOT knit into these yet, some patterns you will yarn over and knit into these, but to keep the baby booties snug, I prefer not to )
Step 5: Work Evenly Along the Edge
Pick up one stitch in each chain (or the number your pattern states), keeping tension even.
Step 6: Repeat on the Other Side
Pick up the same number of stitches along the second edge for a balanced bootie shape.
