Crochet Hippo A Free Pattern Hettie the Hippo
I actually quite like hippos they are too cute with their huge bodies, to their cute little ears, and curly little tails. How do’ya think we did? Cute Huh? would you believe me if I said Easy too?
Please Note:
You should be familiar with amigurumi style written patterns
use a marker and move on completion of every round.
shaping of hippo is all in the stuffing and the longer end of the body will be used to balance the head onto.

You will need a measuring tape. And will be asked to crochet until your piece is a certain length.
Yarn 50 grms of RED HEART BELLA LIGHT GREY (BUY NOW)
and I used a 3.5mm hook
2 googly eyes and some stuffing.
HEAD:
ch2,
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook,
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12sts)
Rnd 3: [sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st] Repeat [ ] 4 times (16sts)
Rnd 4: [sc in next 3sts, 2sc in next st] Repeat [ ] 4 times (20sts)
Rnd 5: [sc in next 4sts, 2sc in next st] Repeat [ ] 4 times (24sts)
Rnd 6: [sc in next 5sts, 2sc in next st] Repeat [ ] 4 times (28sts)
Rnd 7: 1sc in each st around
Rnd 8: [sc in next 2 sts, 2sctog in next sts] Repeat 7 times (21sts)
continue working in sc in each stitch around until the piece measures 3 1/2 inches.
Start to Decrease by, [Sc in next st, s2tog] 7 times.
Start to stuff and shape the head. (pear shaped)
Continue working 2sctog until opening of head is closed. Fasten off.
Leave length to attach to body later.
BODY:
(starting at neck)
Ch 2
Rnd 1: 6sc in 2nd ch from hook,
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12sts)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in each st around
Rnd 4: [1sc in each of next 2sts, 2sc in next st] 4 times (16sts)
Rnd 5: 1 sc in each st around
Rnd 6: [1sc in each of next 3sts, 2sc in next st] 4 times (20sts)
Rnd 7: 1s in each around
Rnd 8: [1sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st] 4 times (24)
Rnd 9 and 10: 1sc in each st around
Rnd 11: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 5 times, sc in next15 sts, (29sts)
Single crochet around until piece measures 4 inches.
Decrease: [sc in next 2 sts, 2sctog] 7 times.
Start Stuffing Here,
Continue working sc2tog until opening is closed over,
Fasten off and Weave end in securely.
Sew Head onto the body.
Make sure the neck of the piece is used to help lay the hippos head on and sewn into place to help hold its position.

Front Legs Make 2
ch2,
Rnd 1: 6sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3-8: sc around for 6 more rounds, fasten off and leave length for sewing legs to body.
Back legs Make 2
Work as for front legs making 1 MORE rnds finishing on Rnd 9.
Stuff all 4 legs and position then securely sew onto body.
Tail ( crochet this directly onto the back end of hippo)
Join yarn and chain 7, sc into 2nds ch from hook and sc in each stitch back to beginning, fasten off and weave in ends.
Ears (Make 2)
Ch2, 6sc in second ch from hook, 2d in next 5sts,, sl st into next sc , fasten off and leave ends for sewing to hippos head, ears should be positioned at top back of head and around 1 inch apart.
You can sew eyes directly, if giving to a very small child please ensure everything is completely secure and safe. I would not recommend these safety eyes for any child under 6 years old.
