Pro Tip: You can use any stitch for these slippers just follow the measurements carefully!
Recommended Stitch: Half Double Crochet (hdc)
I prefer to use half double crochet (hdc) for its balance between flexibility and warmth. It creates a dense, stretchy fabric that feels great on the feet.
How to Crochet the hdc Stitch:
- Yarn Over (YO)
- Insert hook into the next stitch
- YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
- YO again and pull through all 3 loops
That’s it! The hdc stitch is simple and perfect for building slipper socks fast.
Special Tips for Shaping and Fit
- Always work your first hdc into the base of your chain 2 at the start of each round
- To finish a round, place a hdc into the slip stitch that joined the previous round
- These subtle adjustments give the sock its snug shaping and help with stretch
Flexible and Customizable
You can work these slipper socks in any stitch as long as you follow the foot and heel measurements. Experiment with:
- Color changes – stripes just change colour at the beginning of the rounds you want your stripes to be (for the Santa booties, I worked in red for a few rows, Black for 3 rows, back to red for the main boot, and changed to white for the Ankle
- Faux fur cuffs – add a fauz fur yarn for the ankle cuff fold down!
- Ribbing or buttons for detail
- Adding soles or grip pads for durability. dots of glue work great on the soles to stop slipping

Yarn Guidelines for Fold‑Down Cuff Slippers (Approximate)
- Adult Women’s Medium (US 7–9 / UK 5–7): ~180–220 yards of #4 worsted/aran yarn.
- Adult Men’s Large (US 10–12+): ~220–250 yards.
- Children’s Sizes: ~100–150 yards.
- Cuff Factor: A fold‑down cuff adds extra rows, so plan for 20–30% more yarn than a plain ankle slipper.
- Yarn Weight Options:
- Worsted/Aran (#4): Standard choice, warm but not too bulky.
- Chunky/Bulky (#5–6): Requires fewer yards overall (~120–180 yards) but produces thicker slippers.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch

Rnd 3: Ch2, 1HDC in the base of ch2, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next) slip to join round (18sts)
(Check YOUR circle diameter Measurement see above table of measurments)
This circle, slightly stretched, should sit on top of the big toe to little toe! (This will fit a size 6-8 woman) howeverdepending on if your using thinner yarn light fingering etc you may need to add 1 more round the of increasing!!
example: ‘hdc in first 2 sts, 2hdc in next st’ repeat around, and continue to round 4
Rnd 4: Ch2, HDC in base of Ch2 and in in Each Stitch around, and
Make 1 extra stitch in the round by working 1hdc INTO the Slip stitch space of the previous round, slip to join, (19sts)

Make 1 extra stitch in the round by working hdc INTO the Slip stitch space of the previous round, slip to join, (20sts)
Rnd 6 to Rnd 16 ?: repeat rnd 5 increacing by 1 st per round OR until the piece fits over your front half of foot with a little stretch (my daughte rhas very long thin feet and we reached 24 sts then once fit is correct, continue working without the increaces until INSTEP measurement length is reached – Size 6 = 6.75 inches
- (This fits perfectly over my toes along my foot and stops just before my ankle – see the foot diagram above)
HEEL – Turning and working back and forth (HEEL)
NOW We are creating the HEEL part of your sock/slipper and You will now be working in ROWS.
HEEL: Row 1: Ch2, HDC in the base of ch2, HDC in each stitch until 10 sts remaining. (leave these 10 Stitches unworked, bigger sizes and mens adjust to 12sts) TURN. Ch2
Row 2 to Row 6: Ch2, HDC in base of ch2, HDC in each st to last, TURN
- At the beginning of Row 6 and at the END of Row 6 OF HEEL
- FOLD the HEEL part in HALF and slst to join together FIRST and LAST stitches together.
- The hole created is the Back heel seams, which are sewn together to create the back of the heel seam (sew this later )
Ankle and Leg part of the Crochet Slipper boot.
Now we will work AROUND ALL the stitches on the ankle opening, including the SIDE stitches of the HEEL ROWS.
- you can just continue working or Join new coloured yarn at the back heel seam and work HDC evenly around the ankle opening, 24sts (26sts for a looser leg) (working INTO the side of the HEELS stitches)
- For a mens short slipper You can work a few rounds here in a front post double crochet back post double crochet (fpdc, bpdc alternate around), to make a pair of slippers that stop at the ankle OR continue working to create a longer sock.
Fold Over Cuffs slipper socks
- Continue working HDC in each stitch in the round until you have worked around 5 rows, TURN your work and hdc in each stitch working in the opposite direction, continue working theu direction until you reach your preferred length for a fol over cuff has reach your desired length.
Mid-calf for slipper boots or knee length for slipper socks/boot socks.
