What Is the Average Size for a Crocheted Baby Blanket?

The average size for a crocheted baby blanket is about 30 to 40 inches wide and 35 to 45 inches long.

This range works well for most newborn and infant sizes, making the blankets big enough to keep the baby warm but small enough to carry easily.

Tip: You can easily adjust this Crystal Waves pattern to any of these sizes. Just make your starting chain a multiple of 4, then work the repeat rows until your blanket reaches your desired length.

How Big Should a Crochet Baby Blanket Be?

A crochet baby blanket should be big enough to cover and wrap a baby comfortably, without being too bulky or heavy. The best rule of thumb is to aim for a size that fits the baby’s stage — about 30″ × 35″ for newborns and up to 40″ × 60″ for crib or toddler blankets.

If you’re making one as a baby shower gift, a 36″ × 40″ blanket is ideal, it folds neatly into a basket and works from newborn through toddler stage.

The Crystal Waves crochet stitch makes it easy to resize: just keep your starting chain a multiple of 4 and crochet as many rows as you need for the perfect fit.

Materials Needed to Crochet the Crystal Waves Baby Blanket

This easy baby blanket works beautifully with soft DK or baby 4-ply yarns. It’s thick without being heavy and uses just a few balls of yarn.

ou’ll need:

  • 🧵 Yarn: 2 strands of baby 4-ply (DK) yarn held together
Suggested: King Cole Big Value Baby DK or Stylecraft Special Baby 4-ply
  • 🪡 Crochet hook: 4.5 mm
(use a 5.0 mm hook for the starting chain if you crochet tightly)
  • Yarn / tapestry needle, scissors, and a tape measure
  • Gauge: Around 14–16 dc = 10 cm (4″), but gauge isn’t critical for this project

Holding two strands of baby 4-ply yarn gives the perfect thickness and warmth without losing drape ideal for everyday use and gifting.

Yarn Substitutions and Adjustments

You can use any type of yarn for this blanket as long as you pair it with a compatible hook size. Heavier yarns (like worsted or Aran) will make the blanket thicker and larger, while lighter yarns (like fine cotton or sport weight) will produce a softer, drapier texture.

Changing yarn types may slightly alter the final look and size of the blanket, so it’s always a good idea to make a small swatch first.

Tip: If you switch yarn weight, focus on matching the texture and feel you want rather than the exact gauge — the Crystal Waves stitch looks beautiful in nearly any yarn fiber.

Crochet Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • fpsc – front post single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

The fpsc is what gives the Crystal Waves stitch its raised, textured ripple effect, you will start to see the pattern form after just a few rows.

How to Work the Front Post Single Crochet (fpsc)

The front post single crochet (fpsc) is what gives the Crystal Waves Baby Blanket its beautiful raised texture.

It’s worked around the post of a stitch instead of into the top loops like a regular single crochet.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the indicated double crochet stitch (you’ll see the “post” standing up vertically).
  2. Yarn over again and pull up a loop, you will have two loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over once more and pull through both loops.

  • The Crystal Waves Stitch is working in ROWS and once you have made the FIRST row it is a simple  repetition of  *Skip 3 chain stitches, Front Post Single Crochet around the previous rows last Dc within the group of 3Dc sts, Ch3, 3 Dc in the same chain stitch as the Sc*
  • This repeat makes up the main pattern stitch of the basic crystal wave crochet stitch.

What Size Is This Baby Blanket?

You can make this blanket in any size you like — just chain to your desired width.
Your final chain count must be divisible by 4 for the Crystal Waves stitch pattern to work correctly.

For this sample, I chained 124 stitches, which gave me a width of around 34 inches — a lovely stroller or receiving blanket size.

The height is completely flexible. I usually keep crocheting until the blanket looks right and feels balanced when laid flat.
Some stitches, especially textured ones like this, look better when made slightly longer, while others may feel just right when they’re shorter.

That’s the beauty of crochet you can adjust as you go to create the finish you love.

With such a rich texture, I might skip the border altogether. Sometimes, a textured stitch looks its best with a simple, clean edge.

There are no strict rules crochet is all about creativity. Adjust your blanket size and finishing style until you’re happy with how it looks and feels.

  • Your chain length at the start  = width you wish your blanket to be and can be divided by 4
  • Height = To be of your own choosing.  Use the blanket sizing table above

If your First row is curling, GO UP AN Extra couple of hook sizes to create the chain. OR chain extremely LOOSELY

Foundation:
Chain 124 loosely (or any length you prefer, as long as your final stitch count is divisible by 4).

Row 1:

2 dc in 4th chain from the hook, and 2 dc in the same chain (you now have 4 dc at the start). Skip 3 chains, sc in next chain, ch 3, 3 dc in the same chain as the sc.
Repeat from * to * across the row. At the end, skip the last 3 chains, then sc into the Last st Ch 3 and turn.

Row 2:

Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then 2 dc into the base of that same stitch. *Front post single crochet (fpsc) around the 3rd dc post of the previous row’s 3-dc group, ch 3, 3 dc into the ch-3 space from the previous row.*
Repeat from * to * across the row. End with sc in the top of the turning ch-3 from the previous row. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3 and Beyond:

Repeat Row 2 until your blanket reaches your desired length.

When finished, fasten off and weave in all ends neatly with a yarn needle.

Note: The Crystal Waves stitch has such a bold, textured pattern, I chose not to make a border.

  1. Hi, Lisa,
Lovely pattern, but I have one question:
The directions for Row 1 end with “skip the last 3sts, For the LAST st of the ROW, SC into the TOP of the CH3 from the previous row.” I am confused as to where that last single crochet goes. Are you skipping the last three chains and placing the last single crochet in the top of the last of the three chains you just skipped?
