What Yarn Is Best for an Amigurumi Bunny?

The best yarn for an amigurumi bunny is worsted weight yarn, either acrylic yarn or cotton yarn.

  • Acrylic yarn is soft, affordable, and great for gifts
  • Cotton yarn gives crisp stitches and holds shape well

Use a 4.0–4.5 mm crochet hook and stitch tightly so stuffing doesn’t show.

How to Crochet a Long Eared Bunny Using the Amigurumi Technique

  • This free long eared bunny crochet pattern is worked from the bottom up.
  • Legs are crocheted first, then joined and continued into the body and head.
  • Arms and floppy ears are worked separately and secured using slip stitches, keeping sewing to an absolute minimum.

That’s why this pattern is such a hit with beginners.

1. Facial features and sculpting

bringing your cute bunny to life,

Create gentle indentations for the eyes and a small dip for the embroidered button nose so the face looks expressive rather than flat.

  • Mark the eye positions with pins or stitch markers.
  • Mark the nose position centred between the eyes, usually one or two rounds lower.

2. Sculpting the Eye Indentations

You will need: A long doll needle and yarn in the same colour as the head.

Steps:

  1. Insert the needle at the back of the head, leaving a tail outside.
  2. Bring the needle out at the first eye position.
  3. Insert the needle back into the head one stitch away from that same eye position.
  4. Bring the needle out at the back of the head again, close to where you first entered.
  5. Pull both yarn ends gently to draw the eye area inward.
  6. Repeat the same process for the second eye.
  7. When both eyes are sculpted evenly, tie the two yarn ends together at the back with a firm knot.
  8. Push the knot inside the head to hide it.

This creates two even, subtle indentations for the eyes.

3. Sculpting the Nose Area on your long eared bunny

  1. Insert the needle at the back of the head again.
  2. Bring it out at the marked nose point. use the long ears as your guide mark
  3. Insert the needle one stitch away from that point.
  4. Bring it back out at the back of the head.
  5. Pull gently to create a small dip for the nose.
  6. Tie off at the back and hide the ends.

This gives you a neat hollow where the embroidered nose will sit.

4. Embroidering the Button Nose on your long eared bunny

  1. Bring your needle out at the bottom of the nose dip.
  2. Work several horizontal stitches across the nose area, stacking them neatly.
  3. Continue until the nose looks full and even.
  4. If desired, add a small vertical stitch downwards to form the mouth.
  5. Secure the yarn at the back and hide the tail inside the head.

Because the area is sculpted first, the nose will sit naturally in the dip and look more defined.

Safe, Practical & Gift-Ready

The finished bunny is designed as a soft toy suitable for kids when made with embroidered features instead of safety eyes. The shaping creates a sturdy structure that holds up to play, cuddling, and gifting.

This makes the long eared bunny ideal for:

  • Baby showers
