Special Stitch How to work the Dc3tog stitch
The dc3tog (Double Crochet 3 Together in SAME SPACE) is a technique that combines three double crochets into one stitch, creating pointed petal cluster stitches perfect for flowers.
Here’s how to crochet a dc3tog step-by-step:
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over again, and pull up a loop you’ll have 3 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over, pull through 2 loops now, 2 loops remain on your hook. (FIrst partial double crochet completed)
- Repeat steps 1–2 in the SAME space (you’ll have 4 loops on your hook after the third partial double crochet).
- Yarn over, pull through all 4 loops to complete the stitch.
Pattern NOTES:
- Block squares if curling.
- Join the squares into a strip before sewing to the hat
- Mattress stitch join is recommended. see more joining methods here
- TO get best fit for this hat Crown diameter is more important than rounthe d count.
- Check gauge.
Joining your Squares I prefer the Invisible Mattress stitch to seam
- Insert needle under middle bar of V on Square A → pull through.
- Insert needle under middle bar of V Square B → pull through.
- Repeat this, alternating A and B, all the way up the edge.
- Pull to close, do not pull too tightly the seams and stitches should stay in line with each other.

Step 1: How to Crochet the Daisy Flower Granny Squares with 8 Petals
Crochet the required number of Daisy Flower Granny Squares for your chosen size.
- Medium (Teen/Adult): 7 Daisy Flower Granny Squares
- Large (Adult Large): 8 Daisy Flower Granny Squares
Finished Daisy Granny Square Size
- 7 cm × 7 cm (2¾ × 2¾ inches)
To Start:
You will need to make 7 Squares for small/ MEDIUM and 8 Daisy squares for Medium/ LARGE should fit around your head comfortably
Round 1: Yellow (centre) Chain 3, work 8 dc into the first chain. join with a slip stitch and fasten off. (8sts)
Rnd 2: Join Petal color yarn in any chain space
1st daisy petal: ch3, (the chain 3 at the beginning is counted as first partial dc of the 3dctog) work a further partial 2dc, finishing off by working through all loops, *Ch2, 3dctog CLuster in the nxt stitch* repeat around. (8 Double crochet clusters) (8 PETALS)
Round 3: Squaring off your Daisy Change to BLACK color yarn and join in ANY chain space.
*Make 3 dc stitches in the next ch 2 space. In the next ch 2 space make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc )for the first full corner.* Repeat * to * Sl st to the 3rd chain of the start
STEP 2: How to Join the Daisy Flower Granny Squares
Sew the squares together by joining sides to sides (Lengthways)
once you have joined the granny squares side by side to create one continuous strip, then set it aside while you crochet the hat.
DO not Close off the circle yet as this will give you wiggle room to attatch the strip to the main Hat
Step 3: Crochet the Hat Crown
Work the crown from the top down. Continue increasing evenly until the crown reaches the measurements in the sizing table.
Starting at the Top and sides of HAT
In Black Yarn.
(Ch3 at the start does NOT count as an st)
Rnd 1: Chain 3 and work 11 dc INTO the first chain, slip to join. (11 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch2, 2dc in each st around, slip to join. (22 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat around, slip to join. (33 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, repeat around, slip to join. (44 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, repeat around, slip to join. (55 sts)
Rnd 6: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts, repeat around, slip to join. (66 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, repeat around, slip to join. (77 sts)
(check hat circle diameter here and finish HERE MEDIUM SIZE and proceed to rnd 9, if you need to work more increase rounds proceed to rnd 8 )
Rnd 8: Ch2, 2dc in next st, dc in next 6 sts, repeat around, slip to join. (88 sts)
Rnd 9: Working in the BACK LOOP ONLY dc in each stitch around. (77 sts, 88 sts)
Rnd 10 – Hat height below for size: work dc in each stitch around.
work until Hat Length measurement below (These adjusted heights represent the bucket section only, excluding the Daisy Flower panel before attaching the floral band.)
(Fold the hat in half to ensure the hat height)
Continue working even rounds until the hat body measures:
- Medium: 5.25″
- Large: 5.75″
Fasten off leaving a long tail to use to sew the daisy panel to the top of your hat.
Step 4: Join the Daisy Flower Granny Square Strip
Position the granny square strip evenly around the hat and join it securely using your preferred joining method.
Ensure Completed Hat body and Daisy Band Now reach height of HAT for Size
M = 7.5 – 8 inches, L= 8 – 8.5 inches
If not, dc around working into the bottom stitches of the squares rows around to achieve sizes, or continue.
Join Black yarn with a slip stitch to any stitch on the bottom of the square panels.
Rnd 12: Dc Evenly in Each stitch around the BOTTOM OF THE DAISY SQUARES,
slip to join (77 sts ) or (88sts)
Step 5: Crochet the Brim
Rnd 13: Working in The FRONT LOOPS ONLY, 2dc in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 sts, repeat around, slip to join
Rnd 14: dc in each st around, slip to join
Rnd 15: 2dc in nxt st, dc in nxt 2 sts, repeat around, slip to join,
NOTE: FOr a wider Brim You can add on More rounds if you wish but the wearer of this hat felt it was just right
Rnd 16: slip stitch in each stitch around, fasten off and weave in all ends.
Can you make this hat bigger or smaller?
Measure your head circumference and divide by 3.14 (π) to find the ideal crown diameter. Continue the top of hat in the same increasing pattern rounds until your circle reaches that measurement, then work even rounds for the sides until your hat piece measures the height of the hat minus the Daisy Flower panel.
Remember, each daisy square has 11 stitches across each side, so when calculating your head circumference, make sure the number of squares will fit evenly around your head.
And the final circumference before joining the daisy squares is divisible by 11 sts
