Stunning Large Sunburst Granny Square Pattern FREE
This Large Sunburst Granny Square Pattern is my larger version. Based on the popular Sunburst Granny Square.
For this square, you will work four colorful rounds of stitches to make the textured sunburst center, then square off the motif before continuing with solid stitch rounds to create the finished granny square.
Large Sunburst Granny Square Crochet Pattern
This large Sunburst Granny Square motif is my larger version of the popular Sunburst Granny Square.

For this square, you will work four colorful rounds of stitches to create the textured sunburst center, then square off the motif before continuing with solid stitch rounds to create the finished granny square.
This Large Sunburst Granny Square Pattern is written using US crochet terms.
Yarn and Colors You will need 5 colors of yarn:
- Color A – Center
- Color B – Puff stitch round
- Color C – Double crochet cluster round
- Color D – Treble crochet cluster round
- Color E – Squaring round and solid outer rounds
You can use four different colors for the Sunburst motif and then one contrasting or neutral color to square off the motif and work the solid outer section.
- Yarn: ANY yarn compatible with your hook I used double-knit yarn for the sunburst squares in the picture
- Crochet hook: I used a 4.5mm hook
- Finished size: Dependent on yarn used

Pattern Notes
The Large Sunburst Granny Square Pattern works outward from the center.
- This pattern uses US crochet terms.
- Rounds 1–4 create the colorful Sunburst motif.
- Change color at the beginning of each of the first four rounds.
- The beginning ch 4 in Rnd 1 does not count as a stitch.
- After Round 1, the beginning chain does count as the first stitch.
- Rnd 5 squares off the circular Sunburst motif.
- From Rnd 6 onward, work into every individual stitch across each side.
- Each corner is formed around a ch-3 corner space.
- Repeat the final solid round to make your Sunburst Granny Square as large as required.
Special Stitches
Puff Stitch (puff st (4 yarn over pull ups))
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the indicated stitch, and pull up a loop.
- yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (9 loops on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook. Ch 1 to close the puff stitch.
4 Double Crochet Cluster (4-dc cl)
A 4-dc cluster is made by partially working 4 double crochet stitches into the same space and joining them together at the top.
- yarn over, insert your hook into the indicated space, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, leaving the final 2 loops of the dc on your hook.*
- Repeat from * to * 3 more times in the same space.
- You will have 5 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops to complete the cluster.
5 Treble Crochet Cluster (5-tr cl)
- yarn over twice, insert your hook into the indicated space, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, leaving the final 2 loops of the tr on your hook.*
- Repeat from * to * 4 more times in the same space.
- You will have 6 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops to complete the cluster.
Rnd 1: Double crochet round
- Using Color A, ch 4 (does not count as a st). Work 16 dc into the first ch. Sl st to the first dc to join. Fasten off Color A.
Rnd 2: Puff Stitch Round,
Join Color B in any st. Ch 3.
- Work 1 puff st in the same st, ch 1.* Puff st in the next st, ch 1.*
- * Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the first puff st to join. (16 puff sts, 16 ch-1 sps). Fasten off Color B.
Rnd 3: 4 Partial Double Crochet Cluster Round
Join Color C in any ch-1 space.
- Ch 3 (counts as the first partial dc of the beginning cluster). Work 3 partial dc in the same ch-1 space, leaving the final loop of each dc on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on your hook to complete the beginning 4-dc cluster. Ch 2.
- work 1 (4-dc cl in the next ch-1 space), ch 2.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the top of the beginning cluster to join. (16 4 dc cluster)
Rnd 4 – 5 Partial Treble Crochet Cluster Round
Join Color D in any ch-2 space.
- Ch 4 (counts as the first tr). Work 4 partial tr in the same ch-2 space, leaving the final loop of each tr on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook to complete the beginning cluster.
- Ch 4. work a 5-tr cl in the next ch-2 space, ch 4.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 4 to join (16 tr clusters, 16 ch-4 sps). Fasten off Color D.
Rnd 5: Turning the Sunburst Motif into a Granny Square
Join Color E in any ch-4 space.
This space will become your first corner. Ch 4 (counts as first tr). Work 3 tr, ch 3, 4 tr in the same ch-4 space. [Your first (4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr) corner has now been made.]
- work 4 dc in the next ch-4 space.
- Work 4 hdc in the next ch-4 space.
- Work 4 dc in the next ch-4 space.
- Work (4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr) in the next ch-4 space.*
Repeat from * to * around, omitting the final corner on the last repeat because your first corner has already been worked.
- Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 4 to join.
- Do not fasten off if continuing with Color E.
Rnd 6 – First Solid Round
Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Work 1 dc in each st across to the first ch-3 corner space. Work (dc, trc, ch 1, dc, trc) in the corner space.
- work 1 dc in each st across to the next ch corner space. Work (dc, trc, ch 1, dc, trc) in the corner space.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to join. (24 sts each side)
How to Make the Sunburst Granny Square Larger
Once you have completed Round 6, increasing the size of the square is simple.
So Rnd 7 and following rounds are solid granny square rounds as follows
- Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Work 1 dc in each st across to the first ch-3 corner space. Work (dc, trc, ch 1, trc, dc) in the corner space.
- work 1 dc in each st across to the next ch corner space. Work (dc, trc, ch 1, dc, trc) in the corner space.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 to join. (Each side will increase by 16sts (4 sts, each corner)
Repeat this round until your Large Sunburst Granny Square reaches your required size.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Why is my Granny Square curling inwards?
- When making the motif the Circle may curl inwards but this should straighten out in the Squaring rounds.
- If your granny square is curling inward, it’s usually caused by tight tension, a small hook size, uneven stitch counts, or tall stitches that aren’t balanced with enough chain spaces.
- Sunbursts and textured granny squares often begin as circles, so they may curl until the squaring‑off round adds enough height to flatten the edges.
- A quick steam block and let dry or if really curling inwards consider adjusting your hook size which can instantly fix curling and help your granny square lie perfectly flat.
Why does my square need blocking, and do you really need to block them?
Textured squares like the granny square sunburst motifs often need a gentle steam block to relax the puff stitches and help the square lie flat.
Why is my square wavy or ruffled?
This means you added too many stitches in one round. Check your stitch counts, especially in puff or cluster rounds.
Can you use Different Yarn weights?
These types of granny squares actually do well if you want to mix an Aran weight into the PUFF stitch rounds (Rnd2) and it makes it POP, if you are thinking of using a heavier weight yarn within the block dropping down a hook size from what you are using will help to balance it out. to balance it out
