Highland Cow Crochet Pattern FREE (LOW- SEW)
This is a FREE crochet pattern for a Highland Cow. I have written the cow crochet pattern to be as easy to understand as possible, It is a SEW crochet pattern and there is little sewing to put the highland cow

What you will need to crochet the Highland COW
I used a 6.00 mm hook (14 inches Head to toe)
I also made the SAME cow pattern using Double knit yarn and a 2.500mm hook! he measured 6 inches.
2x 100g of Plushy-type yarn.- View Yarns HERE (#ad) plus a little pink for the nose and a small amount of yarn in white for the horns.
A medium-sized amount of stuffing/fiber fill – BUY HERE (#AD) .

Abbreviations : US Terms
ch- Chain
sc – single crochet
2sctog – work 2 single crochet stitches together to decrease by 1 stitch
2sc – work 2 single crochet stitches into the one to increase by 1 stitch
Notes:
- You will NOT join rounds, you will work continuously so please use a stitch marker to help keep you right for the start/end of rounds
- When you are joining the arms to the body you should FOLD the arms in half Making sure the last round decreases are at the underside of the arm and working through Both sides of the arm AND BODY continue working in single crochet and join as you go Arms :

- You do NOT need to make a magic ring to start. You will chain 2, and single crochet into the FIRST chain to make the first round of stitches
- If you want to make a cow with a coloured patch then you can decide where you want to have it.
- You can add a new colour as you’re working around to make a coloured pattern, to change colour on the last step before you pull through to finish the stitch use the new yarn to pull through to change colour
- I prefer to make all the Attached limbs before the main body as if I can attach them and join as I go I find it makes the piece look better
TO start the highland Cow In your Main Chosen colour
Horns (Make 2)
(work in a continuous spiral, Do not join rounds)
Ch6, slip to join the last chain to the first chain to create a circle,
Rnd 1: working sc into each chain around by(6sts)
Rnd 2: sc in each st around (6 sts)
Rnd 3: sc in each st around (6 sts)
Rnd 4: sc in each st around (6 sts)
Rnd 5: sc in each st around (6sts)
Rnd 6: sc in each st around (6sts)
Rnd 7: work 2sc-tog around (3st)
Rnd 8: 2sctog, and pull through the last stitch to finish, fasten off leaving a long tail to join
Put to side to attach above ears later, (The horns are FLATTENED then shaped and sewn directly onto the top of the Head )
Nose:
chain 7: work 2sc into the second ch from hook, sc into each stitch until last, work 3sc into the last st. Working back along and into the opposite side of the chain sc to end, slst to join,
Ch1, sc into each stitch around. sli to join, ch1 and single crochet around the whole of the nose stitches. Fasten off and leave a long tail to join to the head.
ARMS (make 2)
Rnd 1: Ch2, working 6sc stitches into the first chain from the hook
Rnd 2: 2 SC into each stitch around (12sts)
Rnd 3: SC in each st around (Switch to NEW COLOUR If Required)
Rnd 4: SC in each st around (12 sts)
Rnd 5: SC in each st around (12sts)
Rnd 6: Work 2 SC together (Twice ) SC in each st to end of row (10 sts)
Stuff lightly to shape the arm.
Rnd 7: 2 SC together (once), SC in each stitch to last 2 sts, work 2 SC together (9 sts)
Put the arms to the side. You will join these at Round 19 of BODY.
EARS: (Make 2)
Rnd 1: Ch2, working 6SC into the first chain from the hook (6)
Rnd 2: 2 SC into each stitch around (12sts) TO finish the EAR, SKIP 1st and slip stitch to the next st to join.
Fasten off, NOW use slip stitch as the stitch when you are asked to join the EARS to the head of the Cow.
LEGS: (make 2 but only fasten off the first one)
Working in continuous rounds and using a stitch marker to keep track of rows
Rnd 1: start with chain 2, working 6 sc into the chain (6 sts)
Rnd 2: work 2 sc into each stitch around (12sts)
Rnd 3: sc in each st around (12sts)
Rnd 4: sc in each st around
Rnd 5 to Rnd 7: sc in each st around (12)
Make 1 More LEG as above DO NOT FASTEN OFF on the SECOND LEG
JOIN LEGS
Rnd 8: Holding the first leg you made to the side of the second leg join by single crocheting directly into the second leg and continue working around the 2 legs (24sts)
Row 9: Sc into the first 11 sts 2 sc (middle centre of the cow just above leg join ) and sc until last stitch work 2sc into the last st of the round. (26sts)
Row 10: sc in each stitch around
Rnd 11 to Rnd 15: sc in each stitch around ( here you can swap colours as you wish to make a coloured patch) (26sts)
Fold work in Half, and Place a marker at each side (you will now make your 2SCtog, [Decrease by 1st} here over the next 3 rows moving the marker once the 2 decreases are made
Rnd 16: Sc to the first SIDE marker, work 2sctog, sc to the next SIDE marker, work 2sctog, sc to last st. (24 sts)
Rnd 17: Sc to the first SIDE marker, work 2sctog, sc to the next SIDE marker work 2sctog, sc to last st. (22 sts)
Rnd 18: Sc to the first SIDE marker, work 2sctog, sc to the next SIDE marker work 2sctog, sc to last st. (20 sts)
Joining the arms of the Highland Cow as we Go
Rnd 19: on this next round Join the arms over 4 sts with the marker in the middle of these sts
For the Next arm Place exactly, in the same manner, and work the Single Crochet THROUGH both ARM and Body stitches to join.
(You should have 6 stitches between each arm Front and Back) (20sts total) work along the last 6sts, to the FIRST ARM, Place the Marker HERE and this is the NEW START of the round from here on.
NECK: work 2sctog [decrease] around (10sts)
COW HEAD
Rnd 1: sc into each stitch, around (10sts)
Rnd 2: work 2sc into each st around, (20sts)
Rnd 3: *2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st* (30sts sts)
Rnd 4: sc in the next st, repeat around (30 sts)
Rnd 5: sc in the next st, repeat around (30 sts)
Rnd 6: sc in the next st, repeat around (30 sts)
Rnd 7: sc in the next st, repeat around (30)
Rnd 8: sc in the next st, sc in the next st, (30)
Rnd 9: sc in the next st, sc in the next st, (30)
EYES: use safety eyes and position them equally apart on the head.
Rnd 10: sc in the next st, sc in the next st, (30)
ADD EARS in this round. Position before joining as you go
Rnd 11: sc into each st around start to stuff head (joining ears as you work)
Rnd 12: *in the next st work 2sctogether (dec), sc in the next st * repeat around
Rnd 13: 2sctogether in each stitch around until you have 10 sts left, (fasten off and SEW the circle closed.)
Attaching and securing the HORNS: Make sure the Horns are folded flat. Lay the first few rows onto the last few rounds of the head with the horn pointing towards the ears. Secure by sewing to the top of the head over the first few rows of the horn, and turn up the tip of the horn.
NOSE: Position your nose before joining to ensure you are happy with the placement of the nose between the eyes and sew to the HEAD to secure. (using pictures as a guide)
weave in all ends and fill only slightly
and attach individually pulling a loop through the stitches of the head between the horns across the top of the Cows Head to create his fringe.
If you like the Hair on the mini Highland Cow this is simply Double knit yarn pulled through and the twisted fibres of the strand are separated.
