Crocheting an ear warmer headband is a great project to crochet when you are bored! Or in my case a small crochet project when I’m a little bit anxious and just need a project to crochet.
I’m forever making these headbands and I wear mine around the house during the colder months. These would make a great gift for an elderly person to keep their ears cozy and warm.

There is NO guage to worry about! This free crochet ear warmer pattern I find I can use the basic pattern and create many different looks with a change of yarn or hook size. and just by adjusting the starting chain length.
This is probably one of the easiest headband ear warmer crochet patterns around, the pattern stitch is made by working into the BACK LOOPS ONLY And I have added suggestions to make it Small Medium or Large sizes
How wide should a crocheted ear warmer be?
The width of the ear warmer headband should be enough to cover comfortably over the ear.
I like my headbands to be quite wide to fit not only around the ear but with some extra depth on each side of the ear too.
I have found at least 4+ inches to be the best width for a headband earwarmer
**CREATE your starting Chain with a larger hook and 1 INCH smaller than recommended for your size
- TEEN – Approx finished length of ear warmer headband = Head circumference 18.8′ – 20′
- Small adult – Approx finished length of ear warmer headband = Head circumference 19′-20′
- M adult – Approx finished length of ear warmer headband = Head circumference 20′-21′
- L Adult – Approx finished length of ear warmer headband = Head circumference 21-22”
I have written the crochet ear warmer/headband pattern in an easy format and it’s a great crochet project for beginners! If you don’t like the Double crochet Stitches, you could substitute a half double crochet!
And you to easily adjust the length and measurements.
You can chain a length to FIT your head size and follow the pattern exactly the same ensuring when you start the crochet Headband at ROW 2, your first 10 stitches are Slip stitches for the BACK of the headband.
Earwarmer headbands can be made without a flower or any embellishment you wish.
My Daughter just loves these simple crocheted headbands as she can wear them with her hair tied up in a ponytail or a messy buns hairstyle and yet still look stylish when popping out in the cold.
NOTES:
Gauge – Not important as you are working to the measurement you require
Hook – 4.00 mm Crochet Hook
Yarn – Double Knit/worsted) Approx length of ear warmer/ headband 22′ I can get 3 Crochet headbands from a 100g ball of double knit yarn.
Stitch marker (move the stitch marker up after each round)

The headband is worked in Rounds, working the BACK loops of the Single crochet and double crochet sts. DO NOT TURN.
Abbreviations and stitches used: The pattern is written in US TERMS
Ch – Chain
DC- Double Crochet
BL dc – Back loop double crochet, Working INTO The back loop of specified stitches
BL sc – Back Loop Single Crochet
BL sl st – Back loop Slip Stitch
sl st to join – slip stitch to join
The Free Crochet ear warmer Pattern Starts Here
Use 1 size Bigger HOOK to create a chain or use the 4.00mm and chain extremely loosely until you meet your required length
Chain 80 + 3 (Or however many you require This is for an adult using DK and a 4.00 mm crochet hook) if making for a different size chain length of measurement add 3 extra chains),
sl st into 1st chain created to make a full circle (making sure the chain is not twisted) Place a marker to signal the end of the round
Row 1: BLSC into the first 10 chains, work 1 BLDc in every chain until the end of the round (Place marker HERE)
Row 2 to Row 6: BLSC into the First 10 sts, BLDC in each stitch around, (Place marker HERE)
(Or you can continue in an established pattern until your preferred desired width is achieved)
How WIDE should a headband be
Your headband ear warmer needs to cover your ears, at LEAST 4.5 inches if you do not know the recipient’s actual head size.
